Primary Purpose
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Assistant Professor/Program Director of Fire Science provides instruction to students in the Fire Science program, directs student discussion and evaluates student performance in the classroom. In addition, this position develops curriculum, assesses student learning, and provides student advising.
PROGRAM DIRECTOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities of the program director include college and department commitments as well as community connections. The program director is hired based on the needs of the program, department, and College and in alignment with the needs of the profession/industry 1 . Relationships between the professional community and the college program are critical to the success of the program in our region and throughout the state. Overall, the program director is trusted to help develop, guide, and lead the program to ensure alignment between the College’s mission and vision and the professional community’s expectations of excellence. The following areas highlight responsibilities of all program directors:
1. Overall program development.
2. Program policies, practices, and expectations.
3. Program handbook.
4. Course scheduling.
5. Supporting program faculty.
6. Student recruitment.
7. Student retention and tracking.
8. Academic advising.
9. Curriculum development.
10. Program Advisory Board meetings.
11. Building and maintaining community partnerships.
12. Collaboration with Department Chairs.
13. Equipment, lab, and dedicated learning environment maintenance
14. Experiential learning.
15. Certificate alignment.
16. Accreditation.
17. Other CTE duties as assigned.
1 A note about terms. Throughout this document several terms are used interchangeably: industry, professional community, and profession. What remains consistent is the clear alignment between COCC programs and the broader professional area they represent.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction in area of discipline, using approved course outcome guides. Teaching assignments may be during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend, and could include classes taught at any of the College campuses, online or remotely.
  • Provide student advising and assistance in areas of course selection, career planning, job placement and employment follow-up.
  • Hold at least five scheduled office hours per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
  • Utilize College tools and resources, including the Learning Management System and Disability Services software, to support teaching activities as appropriate.
  • Participate in department meetings, curriculum revision, course assessment, program assessment, and program review.
  • Engage in regular professional growth activities, remain current in the field, and maintain current credentials or licensures as required by the program.
  • Participate in service to the college. This may include participating in College committees, taskforces, peer teams, or other activities.
  • Provide meaningful, professional service to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations.
  • Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.
Department Specific
  • Participate in program-level accreditation self-study, reporting, and site visits.
  • Provide leadership and be responsible for maintaining and evaluating the effectiveness of the Fire Science curriculum leading to an AAS in Fire Science.
  • Ensure that the Fire Science program and course offerings comply with the current industry standards as established by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST); the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA); the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE); and IFSAC. The individual will also ensure that the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) course offerings comply with the current industry standards as established by the NWCG, the local Pacific NW Wildfire Coordinating Group (PNWCG), and the Training Working Team (TWT).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge in the field of Structure and Wildland Fire at all levels of certification and the ability to apply this knowledge.
  • Teach in adverse and fire training ground conditions.
  • Adapt and use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques including the use of technology to enhance student success.
  • Observe, direct, and oversee students ensuring safety in the classroom or laboratory.
  • Work with and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Effectively use Microsoft office suite, various course management systems, technology to teach traditional, hybrid, HyFlex, or online courses and other technology used in the instruction setting.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members.
  • Provide services to students in a manner which does not discriminate as to race, creed, religion, color, national origin, disability, age, sex, sexual preference or marital status.
  • Travel and or teach at various hours and campus locations, as required.
  • Foster a collaborative atmosphere among students and the willingness to work as a member of a team with faculty.
  • Utilize excellent oral, written and electronic communication skills.
Ergonomic Requirements
Individuals must be able to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to work on the fire ground and with fire apparatus and equipment. Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
  • AAS Degree in Fire Science or a closely related discipline or a minimum of 24 quarter hours (16 semester hours) of credit in the Fire Science field.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in the fire service.
  • Demonstrated successful teaching, or evidence for the potential for excellence in teaching.

Certifications:
  • Certified as NFPA Instructor I or equivalent with the ability to obtain NFPA Instructor II.
  • Certified as an NFPA Firefighter I and NWCG Wildland Firefighter Type II (FFT2).

Preferred Qualifications
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration or relevant discipline.

Experience:
  • Teaching experience at the community college or university level with demonstrated curriculum development.
  • Experience leading a program/supervising employees.
