JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Plant Science in the College of Agriculture Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University is hiring an Assistant Professor of Turfgrass Soils.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

9-month tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor position with a 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% extension appointment. The successful applicant will specialize in turfgrass science, with an emphasis on soil physical properties and expertise in designing and constructing engineered rootzones or other relevant experience. The candidate will be expected to develop a comprehensive research program that addresses important issues related to soil physical properties and turfgrass performance and will be expected to lead their own program through extramural competitive federal funding opportunities. Recruitment and advising of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as interaction with the turfgrass industry are expected.  The candidate will teach three unique classes to students in the resident and online turfgrass programs. The position will provide leadership as the Director of the Center for Sports Surface Research which is dedicated to the improvement of all sports surfaces.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ph.D. in soil science, turfgrass soils, or a related field is required. Candidate must possess disciplinary depth in a field relevant to turfgrass science, with the ability and desire to approach problems taking turfgrass systems into account.  Applicants should provide evidence for conducting and publishing research, expertise in modern research methods, excellence in teaching, and ability to mentor and advise graduate students. Interest in and ability to contribute to interdisciplinary research collaborations in one or more areas central to the College of Agricultural Sciences is expected. An ability to engage professionally with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students across the university is required.

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. 

SALARY: 

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.  An excellent benefits package includes health, dental, and retirement contributions.
