Job Description:

The Department of Theatre and Dance at The University of Texas at El Paso invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor of Practice in Lighting and Sound. This position is for a prominent or emerging designer who is committed to educating and cultivating the next generation of theatre professionals, educators, and leaders while serving UT El Paso's dynamic student population and contributing to an inclusive framework of excellence.  The successful candidate will begin service in this full-time renewable position in fall 2024.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Supervise the lighting and sound shop.
• Serve as or supervise student master electricians and sound design.
• Design lights and/or sound for the department production season including new, devised, and student-led work while mentoring and supervising student designers and    technicians.
• Collaborate with all production areas and work closely with the head of lighting, teaching assistants, and staff.
• Form working partnerships beyond the department to produce new work and scholarship and create community engagement.
• Teach undergraduate theatre courses at the lower and upper division level, including but not limited to lighting design, theatre graphics (drafting), principles of lighting and   sound,   introduction to theatre.
• Manage the budgets for both the lighting and sound shop and season productions within the larger University system.
• Contribute harmoniously to the department's work with the values, vision, and mission of UT El Paso and the Department of Theatre and Dance.
• Mentor students in academic and career planning.
• Develop and maintain a record of service and continued professional growth.
• Perform additional service duties including student recruitment, curricular assessment and revision, season selection, departmental representation, etc.

Requirements:

• Terminal degree in lighting or sound design or equivalent professional experience.
• A demonstrated commitment to serving and mentoring a diverse population in a student-centered educational environment.
• Evidence of substantial experience in programming, electrician, drafting and digital design techniques.
• Working knowledge of current technologies, safety, and pedagogy.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and resource/time-management skills.
• Evidence of excellence in mentorship.
• A commitment to collegiality within and outside the university.

Additional Information:

Salary: 9-month appointment salary starts at $50,000
