The Community

General Description / Primary Purpose
The Department of Physics and the College of Education and Human Services (COEHS) at the University of North Florida (UNF) are seeking applications for a joint tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level to start in August 2024. This position would report to the Department of Physics and COEHS, with teaching load primarily assigned to the Department of Physics and expectations for interdisciplinary research and service through the Northeast Florida Center for STEM Education (NEFSTEM). We are primarily interested in candidates with a background in Physics Education Research, Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and Professional Learning for high school STEM teachers and university STEM faculty. The successful candidate will be able to excel at teaching courses throughout the physics curriculum, conduct externally funded research incorporating undergraduate students, and be committed to increasing student participation and persistence in STEM fields. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or a related field. The preferred candidate will have experience with academic leadership across STEM disciplines, faculty and teacher professional learning, building productive collaborations between STEM and education faculty, and national leadership in physics education. Start-up funds are not available for this position.
UNF offers a bachelor’s degree in physics and has recently launched an interdisciplinary master’s degree program in Materials Science and Engineering. NEFSTEM hosts professional learning and outreach events for K-12 teachers and students with integrated education research studies, and is interested in expanding its reach to STEM higher education. NEFSTEM and the Department of Physics share overlapping interests in advancing assessment/grading methods, integrating computation across the STEM learning environment, and increasing access to authentic problem-solving experiences in STEM classrooms. The standard teaching load for tenure-track faculty is three courses per semester. UNF is a Carnegie Community Engaged institution, a designation that recognizes the University’s collaboration with community partners from the local to the global level. Following the teacher-scholar model, UNF faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of academic excellence in all phases of instruction, research/scholarship/creative activity, as well as in service. Not including this position, the Physics Department has faculty in condensed matter physics, astrophysics and astronomy, physics education research, as well as in earth science. COEHS includes education faculty with expertise in mathematics, science, and computer science content and pedagogy. We are a PhysTEC member, a past host of CUWiP, and participants in the APS-IDEA Network. The Department of Physics is engaged in several curricular reforms: studio physics, computation in the classroom, and exploratory labs.
