Assistant Professor of Philosophy

General Description of the Position

The Department of History, Political Science and Philosophy at Delaware State University invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor appointment in Philosophy for fall 2023. We are looking for a strong record of scholarship, excellence in undergraduate teaching, and a commitment to service. We are especially interested in applicants who can teach introductory and upper-level courses. A Ph.D. in Philosophy is required by the date of appointment.


Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The following are the functions essential to performing this job: 
1. Teach survey and upper-level courses in philosophy 
2. Teach the following existing courses: Critical Thinking, Ethics, Logic, Bioethics, Introduction to Philosophy, Ancient Philosophy.
3. Create new courses as needed. 
4. Conduct on-going research for peer-reviewed publications in area of expertise as prerequisite for promotion and tenure 
5. Perform service on university, departmental and community committees 
6. Recruit and Advise students

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

The individual in this job must possess these skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities: 
1. Relevant teaching experience at the university level 
2. Familiarity with computers 
3. Demonstrate institutional citizenship through active engagement with the department, college, university, public, and professional communities


Qualification Standards

1. Education: Ph.D. Philosophy is required in hand by start of employment 
2. Preferred experience: University/College level teaching
