Assistant Professor of Music/Theory and Applied Brass
The Department of Music at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor specializing in music theory and ear training to begin August 16, 2024. The teaching load for this position is a 3/3. Review of applicants will begin immediately and will continue until position has been filled.
We seek a dynamic, creative, collaborative, and dedicated teacher of music theory, ear training, and applied brass instruction. Of particular interest are candidates who can provide leadership in reimagining our music foundation curricula to reflect recent trends and align with a diversity of degree options and career trajectories in music, including (but not limited to) music technology, music business/entrepreneurship, commercial music, etc. The successful candidate will foster student growth through successful teaching within curricular pathways for four undergraduate programs in music (Bachelor of Music Education, Bachelor of Arts in Music/Commercial Music & Jazz, Bachelor of Arts in Music/Performance, and Bachelor of Arts in General Music). The position requires solid, thoughtful undergraduate pedagogy and positive mentorship for students from a variety of backgrounds and ability levels.
Responsibilities will include overseeing the music foundation courses. The successful candidate will create and maintain synthesis across music foundation courses including music theory, ear training and aural skills, class piano. The successful candidate will primarily teach courses within the music core curriculum with a focus on music theory and aural skills. An applied focus in a brass instrument area is also required as this involves applied instruction in brass and the ability to teach various brass-related subjects.
Additional Responsibilities Include:
· Teach undergraduate courses in music theory, analysis, and ear training.
· Work collegially with music faculty members to help create a progressive and integrated musicianship foundation and curriculum.
· Committee and service assignments consistent with tenure track faculty appointments.
· Engagement in creative and/or research activity within the candidate’s primary musical discipline.
· Teach in a secondary area, such as applied studies on a brass instrument and other brass related subjects within the music education curriculum.
· Actively recruit and retain a talented and appropriately sized applied studio of undergraduate students.
Required qualifications: Terminal degree or commensurate professional experience is required. University-level teaching experience is greatly preferred. References will be requested later in the hiring process.
