The Department of Mathematics at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure-track position in Statistics/Data Science Education at the Assistant Professor level with appointment to begin in August 2024. Position
CSUF faculty are committed teacher-scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, labs, and individually mentored projects. Candidates for this position must have a solid theoretical and applied background in Statistics and/or Data Science education and a passion for teaching and research. The successful candidate will contribute to the expansion of our Statistics/Data Science Education programs here at CSUF through teaching, research, professional activities, and service.
Responsibilities
This position includes the following responsibilities:
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in mathematics, including graduate teacher-oriented courses in statistics education and data science in both face-to-face and virtual settings.
- Maintain an active research program which involves students and is related to the teaching and learning of mathematics, with particular emphasis in issues of statistics and mathematics education.
- Participate in departmental service and advise students in the teaching options of the undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
This position offers a number of exciting opportunities to collaborate with elementary, middle school, and high school teachers, CSUF College of Education faculty members, community college instructors, and mathematicians on a variety of teaching, research, and grant-funded projects. The successful candidate will contribute to the mathematics community at CSUF through teaching, research, professional activities, and service on departmental and university-wide committees.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must:
- Have a Ph.D. in Statistics Education or Data Science Education. Alternatively, have a Ph.D. in Education or Mathematics Education with substantial training in Statistics; or a Ph.D. in Statistics with demonstrated experience and expertise in Education. All degree requirements must be completed prior to the starting date.
- Be able to teach and contribute to developing a series of courses related to Data Science and Statistics Education at both undergraduate and graduate levels, with a focus on preparing future teachers and practitioners and incorporating topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Have a well-defined research agenda in either Data Science Education or Statistics Education with a clear vision of current and future work and how both undergraduate and graduate students will be involved in this work.
- Have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with a culturally diverse campus community.
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in contributing to our growing Data Science programs.
- Excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Experience with Data Science and/or Machine Learning.
- Interest in collaborating and contributing to the mathematics community at CSUF through research and professional activities, such as DEI-focused workshops as well as service on departmental and university-wide committees.
- A successful record of obtaining external funding.
- Teaching expertise in online/virtual environments.

About the Mathematics Department
The Mathematics Department has 36 tenured or tenure-track faculty members and offers an undergraduate degree program with concentrations in Teaching Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Pure Mathematics, and Applied Mathematics. The department also offers the following graduate degree programs: M.A. in Teaching Mathematics, M.S. in Statistics, and M.S. in Computational Applied Mathematics. Extra-curricular activities are an integral part of our department culture. We are considered a leader in cutting edge and inclusive pedagogical practices. Our faculty often pursue and are awarded grants to fund efforts to support our students. Mathematics and Statistics Education at CSUF
The Mathematics Department currently has seven full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty members in the area of Mathematics Education and statistics. Research areas of the Mathematics Education group include advanced mathematical thinking, problem posing and problem solving, mathematical modeling, professional development, and access and equity issues in mathematics. In addition, the Mathematics Department has seven full time tenure or tenure track faculty members in Statistics. The faculty in the Statistics group are engaged in a wide spectrum of research activities, including statistical modeling of education data, Biostatistics, statistical learning and statistical computing, Bayesian Statistics, and design of experiments.
We encourage and support faculty in their efforts to secure grants. The Mathematics Education and Statistics groups are both involved in a number of nationally funded projects, having received more than twenty million dollars in funding over the past ten years, including a recent grant for developing pathways and overcoming equity gaps in data science learning in partnership with local universities and community colleges. Other current grants include partnerships with local school districts and community colleges that serve diverse student populations.

Compensation
The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $5,405 to $11,994 monthly (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $6,856 to $7,000 per month.
Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm ).
Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
