Unit Mission Statement
Linguistics is the study of language both as a faculty of mind and as a social institution. Linguistics at William & Mary is an interdisciplinary program. Linguistics majors learn about speech sounds, word formation, and sentence structure in the world’s languages, along with models for representing linguistic knowledge in the mind and tools for discovering the structure of different languages. They also study language change, including the history of English, and language variation within communities, including its social and political bases.
Position Summary
The Linguistics Program and Department of English at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Linguistics. Appointment will begin August 10, 2024. We are seeking applicants with research expertise in the semantics of an under-studied language.
Duties include research, teaching, and service to the University. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body. Teaching expectation is 2 courses per semester. Successful applicants must possess the skills to teach compelling courses in semantics, syntax, computational methods, and contribute to the teaching of our introductory course.
Required Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related field at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2024).
Preferred Qualifications
Preference given to applicants with a track record of a robust program of research investigating the semantics of an under-studied language. Previous experience in teaching and mentoring undergraduate research is also preferred.
