The Department of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science at South Dakota State University invites applications to fill two nine-month, full-time, benefit eligible, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Entomology positions. Each position will have teaching (20%) and research (80%) responsibilities. These positions are supervised by the department head of Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science and are open until filled.

RESPONSIBILTIES:
These positions will develop innovative, nationally and internationally recognized extramurally funded research programs. One of these positions will focus on insect pest management in small grains, pulse crops, sunflowers or other relevant crops with research interests in effective integrated pest management for insect pests of small grains and specialty crops that are economically relevant to South Dakota. The second position will focus on pollinator health, pollinator ecology or pollinator systematics with, research interests in ecological concerns related to native pollinator species diversity, pollinator decline, agricultural landscape and environmental change impacts, and pollinator ecosystem services to economically important crops in South Dakota. This focus position will also assume direction of the historically important Severin-McDaniel Insect Research Collection that contains over 1.5 million specimens as part of a broad-based research program and arthropod diagnostics lab supporting and involving colleagues, students, and clientele. The successful candidates are also expected to collaborate with SDSU faculty on other row crops as needed. Collaborations are expected with state, federal, tribal, local government, and non-profit and private agencies.
Undergraduate and graduate student advising and mentoring is expected.
The successful applicant is expected to secure funding from state and national funding sources, publish in discipline appropriate refereed journals, and work effectively with department, college, and multi-state collaborators. Service to the department, college, and university is expected.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ph.D. in Entomology, a field of invertebrate biology, or a closely related discipline.
  • Knowledge and experience in insect ecology or insect pest management strategies.
  • Potential for scholarly publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Potential for competitive grant writing,
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
