Applications are invited for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at the University of Maine (UMaine) in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE, ece.umaine.edu ). Applicants should have expertise in power engineering, emphasizing Renewable and Sustainable Energy and Smart Grids. The successful candidate will hold the Robert N Haskell Power Engineering Professorship for a 5-year term (renewable subject to performance review). Applicants should demonstrate potential for excellence in research, scholarship, teaching, and technical communication. The candidate will be expected to build a creative R&D program, secure extramural funding, publish scholarly work, and supervise M.S. and Ph.D. students. Additionally, the candidate must be dedicated to teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to power engineering, such as electric power conversion, electric power systems, and smart grids. The responsibilities of this position are 50% teaching and 50% research. This faculty position also requires active engagement in service to the profession, UMaine, and the State of Maine. ECE is committed to sharing with the community and K-12 students the wonders of science and technology through activities ranging from scientific ballooning to hands-on learning about energy efficiency and environmental impact. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to this mission.

 

ECE is part of the Maine College of Engineering and Computing (MCEC), a statewide, integrated college that promotes collaboration among engineering and computing disciplines and provides workforce and innovations for economic growth. MCEC includes the College of Engineering and School of Computing and Information Science at UMaine, the Department of Engineering at the University of Southern Maine (USM), with other collaborators including the Department of Computer Science at USM and computing programs at the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) and other campuses within the University of Maine System. With its excellent faculty, ECE offers ABET-accredited BS degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. At the graduate level, ECE offers 4+1, 4+2, MS, and PhD programs. The successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with multiple research centers at UMaine, such as the upcoming 78,000 - 92,000 ft2 Green Engineering & Materials (GEM) Lab and the Senator George J. Required:

  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field by date of hire
  • Strong educational background including research/scholarship in the power area, especially  renewable energy and smart grids

Preferred:


  • Expertise in Next Generation Energy System; Modeling, Control and Operation of Smart Grids, Distributed Energy Resources; Electricity Markets and Microgrids
  • Experience in both Smart Grid hardware and software aspects
  • Interest in supervising student projects on Electric Vehicles (EVs)
  • Knowledge/understanding of Smart Grid education and training for both  the general public and K-12 students
  • Demonstrated experience or willingness to mentor minority and women students
