Parsons School of Design, a college of The New School, invites candidates for a one-year fixed-term faculty of Data Visualization at the rank of Assistant Professor in the School of Art, Media, and Technology.

Parsonsâ™ MS Data Visualization students bring together visual design, computer science, statistical analysis, and ethical considerations of data representation. The program responds to the increased demand for experts who can turn data into insight. Parsons offers an MS in Data Visualization, as well as electives open to other students across Parsons and the New School.

We seek candidates with an active practice in Data Visualization and Machine Learning, with a specific focus on teaching Machine Learning and Data Structures to students from a range of technical backgrounds. Candidates should have knowledge across contemporary approaches, concepts, techniques, and critical issues as they pertain to Data Visualization, Visual Culture, and Machine Learning. Candidates must engage the cultural frameworks within which this work is situated and connect their own practice to debates and histories within their discipline. Candidates should have experience in Data Visualization and Machine Learning to students with a diversity of skills, backgrounds, and interests. We are particularly interested in candidates whose professional work and teaching prepare them to teach a core Machine Learning course, open to all graduate students, in which students will consider classification, regression, clustering, and association models to predict and describe, using supervised and unsupervised learning tools and methods, as well as other courses in Data Visualization.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Assistant Professor may be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, and students from a variety of disciplines across Parsons and The New School. For a fixed term appointment, the teaching load is 6 courses per year or the equivalent, across Data Visualization and related elective courses. 

The faculty member will hold regular office hours, and participate in co-curricular activities on a regular basis, such as critiques, review panels and thesis supervision. They will contribute to the program community by way of committee assignments, project or end of year event coordination, and working groups, and/or advise students. They may be called upon to represent the program for external events related to recruitment and admissions.

The faculty member will be an active member of school-wide, college and university committees as part of university citizenship. They will work with the school dean, associate dean, program directors, and the technical staff to implement support for curricula, policies, and facility designs that are responsive to and respectful of diverse users. The faculty member must actively contribute in maintaining an educationally diverse and creative community in all its activities and programs.
