JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SSET) is accepting applications for one tenure-track Assistant Professor in Biology with a focus in Ecology to start in August 2024. The School offers a Bachelor of Science in Biology with two options: general biology and genetics and development biology. The School also offers a Bachelor of Science in Science, in addition to several other undergraduate and graduate degrees in Engineering, Science, and Engineering Technology.  SSET launched its first interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in engineering in the fall of 2022. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Faculty members of SSET are expected to pursue and sustain scholarly research and publication; recruit and advise students; supervise graduate students and contribute to the department, college, university, and profession through academic and professional service. 

  • Areas of teaching may include assignments in the core courses of the biology curriculum (BIOL110: Basic Concepts and Biodiversity, BIOL220W: Populations and Communities), as well as upper-level electives within the candidate’s expertise (a full list of potential courses can be seen at the Penn State undergraduate bulletin ).

  • Faculty are expected to demonstrate a high level of teaching and research ability and to continue growth in scholarly, artistic, or professional achievement. Areas of research may include but are not limited to, the following topics: computational ecology and ecological modeling, especially around climate change, ecology of the urban/exurban/agricultural environments, interactions of ecosystems, and biogeochemistry with a focus on carbon sequestration and/or agriculture, ecosystem carbon accounting and fixation.

  • Faculty are also expected to actively promote and advance the school’s steadfast commitment to students, academic service, and diversity and inclusion. 

Education:

  • A Ph.D. degree in Biology, Ecology, or a closely related field by the time of appointment is required.

  • The assistant professor should possess a terminal degree or its equivalent in organized research or professional practice; must have demonstrated ability as a teacher or research worker; and must have shown definite evidence of growth in scholarly, artistic, or professional achievement.

Penn State Harrisburg SSET offers a wide range of facilities and equipment for research. Relevant to this position, facilities include cell culture, molecular biology and biochemistry lab equipment, and a fully equipped plant biology laboratory (https://harrisburg.psu.edu/biofuels). The school also has connections to the surrounding agricultural and urban communities. Penn State University has multiple relevant institutes as partners for research, including, but not limited to, the Institute for Energy and the Environment, Huck Life Sciences Institute, Institute for Computational and Data Sciences, and the Southeast Agricultural Research and Extension Center.
