This position will be assigned to the main campus in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Duties and Responsibilities

We seek a bioarcheologist with a background in North American archaeology, or with previous field, or museum expertise dealing with skeletal collections. Applicants who have training and experience with NAGPRA or collections management are also encouraged to apply. The primary responsibilities of this position are to teach lower-division, upper-division, and graduate-level archeology, physical anthropology, and forensic anthropology courses; teach using various modes of instruction (e.g., F2F, distance); conduct scholarly activities including archaeological and/or bio-archaeological research; publish findings in academic publications; participate fully in departmental activities; serve on university committees; advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students; serve on thesis and professional paper committees; and other duties that may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have a terminal degree (Ph.D.), in Anthropology (ABD will be considered) with a specialization in bioarcheology and a regional specialization in prehistoric North America. Overall, we seek a bio-archaeologist who can contribute to our growing graduate program (M.A) in CRM. The candidate should have a history working with marginalized or Indigenous communities, or experience with tribal agencies, state SHPOs, a body of work in Cultural Resource Management (either at the federal or private level) or working with skeletal collections.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

The department has Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology programs, with a Master's program in Southwest Studies, Cultural Resource Management and Criminology. As such, an applicant that can contribute to the departments strength's in CRM, Southwest Studies, or Forensic Anthropology/Criminology will be given preference. Additionally, experience in curating collections of archaeological and ethnographic materials, skeletal collections, and a background in regulations pertaining to NAGPRA would be welcome.

Evidence of teaching related to archeology and physical anthropology, experience in Cultural Resource Management, tribal relations, and membership and involvement in one or more professional organizations, experience in the use of technology in the classroom, and delivery of on-line/distance learning courses will also be given preference.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidate should demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses and supervise graduate student research a must. Should demonstrate an interest in, and commitment to, working with diverse populations and descendant communities.
