The University of Maine’s School of Marine Sciences (SMS) seeks to fill a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Oceanography to begin as early as January 1, 2024. We seek a physical oceanographer who complements the oceanographic, coastal, and climate expertise in SMS and other units at UMaine (including but not limited to Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth and Climate Sciences).

 

We invite applicants from all fields of physical oceanography.  We particularly seek candidates who have an interest in working across disciplines (within and outside marine sciences).

 

Applications are encouraged from candidates with interest in topics important to state priorities and needs, which include understanding and adapting to environmental change, and marine resource management. Geographic regions of interest include, but are not limited to, the northwest Atlantic, the Gulf of Maine, and high latitudes. Applications are also encouraged from those whose research plans will take advantage of and build upon the infrastructure available as part of the University of Maine’s Ocean Observing program (http://gyre.umeoce.maine.edu/buoyhome.php ).

 

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a workload split of 50% Teaching, 50% Research.
  • Develop and maintain an active, extramurally funded research program in the general area of physical oceanography.
  • Teach classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Engage in institutional and professional service.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the institution and discipline.
     

About the Department:

 

The School of Marine Sciences offers graduate and undergraduate degrees and has approximately 360 undergraduate majors, 75 graduate students and 24 full time faculty.  SMS faculty have expertise in Oceanography, Marine Biology, Marine Policy, and Aquaculture. One quarter of the faculty is based at the Darling Marine Center, and two faculty members are located at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland (each is about 2 hours from the main campus in Orono).  Graduate programs include: M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Marine Biology; M.S. and Ph.D. programs in Oceanography; M.S. program in Marine Policy; and a non-thesis Professional Marine Science degree.  We also offer a dual M.S. degree program in Marine Policy coupled with either Marine Biology or Oceanography. Our undergraduate program offers a B.S. degree in Marine Science that can have an area of concentration in Marine Biology, Oceanography or Aquaculture.

Required:

  • A Ph.D. in an area of the physical oceanographic sciences or an equivalent terminal degree by date of hire;
  • A record of peer-reviewed publications;
  • Potential to build an extramurally-funded research program;
  • Evidence of interest and ability to teach and mentor at the undergraduate and graduate levels;
  • Evidence of interest and ability to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within SMS and the discipline;
  • Strong communication skills;
  • A commitment to engage in institutional and professional service

Preferred:

  • Record of successful teaching in a classroom setting;
  • Record of proposing and/or securing extramural funding for research (either as PI or as a substantial contributor to a proposal);
  • Postdoctoral experience;
  • Interest in working with interdisciplinary teams;
  • Interest in research aligned with state needs;
  • Research plans that will leverage UMaine's ocean observing assets
  • Record of mentoring undergraduate students in research experiences
