Job Summary:

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a full-time, academic-year (nine-month), tenure-line position as Assistant Professor of Environmental Health Sciences. UMass Amherst is a doctoral-granting university with the highest research activity (R1) and is the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts. The department offers MS, MPH, and PhD degrees in environmental health sciences, and is part of a large undergraduate degree in public health sciences.

This is a fully state-funded (nine-month) tenure line position. Responsibilities include developing an active program of research, teaching, professional, and community service, as well as mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. Candidates must possess strong research skills with a potential for the development of an extramurally funded research program, commensurate with experience, in Environmental Health Sciences. Candidates will be expected to establish an outstanding independent research program and participate in graduate and undergraduate education and advising. Applicants with research interests in any area of environmental health with connections to public health will be considered; however, our department is particularly interested in candidates with health-related expertise in risk assessment, exposure science, molecular epidemiology, climate change, built environment, One Health, occupational health, or global environmental health to complement existing expertise within the Department of Environmental Health Sciences.

Essential Functions

The successful applicant will join a rapidly growing graduate program and faculty in Environmental Health Sciences. Current areas of faculty research in the Environmental Health Sciences department include environmental exposure assessment, dose-response modeling, developmental toxicology, environmental epidemiology, and endocrine disruptors. In addition to national and international collaborations, public health faculty members collaborate extensively with faculty across the School of Public Health and Health Sciences, other departments on campus, the University's Medical School in Worcester, MA, and Baystate Health in Springfield, MA.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure

Candidates must have a professional profile appropriate for a September 1, 2024, tenure system appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, to include:

  • Terminal degree (PhD, ScD, DrPH) in Environmental Health Sciences, Public Health, or a related field by September 1, 2023
  • Strong evidence of independent and collaborative research
  • Strong record of peer reviewed publications commensurate with experience
  • Demonstrated interest and ability in teaching at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Additional Details

Preference will be given to candidates possessing excellent potential for securing federal research funding, as well as those who demonstrate experience as a postdoctoral fellow in their field of research.
