Primary Purpose
To provide collegiate instruction to students in Human Anatomy and Physiology and other human biology courses as a member of an academic department including full- and part-time science instructors. Instruction is for students in both transfer and career and technical programs. Science faculty write course outcomes, teach, provide academic advising, consult with students, select and/or author laboratory learning experiences appropriate for meeting outcomes, and evaluate and assess student performance in the classroom and laboratory.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide instruction in human anatomy and physiology courses and other human biology courses, including microbiology, nutrition, and/or other courses, using approved course outcome guides. The current instructional load is roughly 80% anatomy and physiology and 20% other biology courses, though this may be flexible depending on candidate strengths and department needs. Teaching assignments may be during the day and/or evening, and could include classes taught at any of the College campuses and online. Schedules are developed collaboratively within the Human Biology Team with input from the Department Chair.
  • Provide student advising and assistance in areas of course selection, career planning, job placement, and employment follow-up.
  • Hold at least five scheduled office hours per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
  • Utilize College tools and resources, including the Learning Management System and Disability Services software, to support teaching activities as appropriate.
  • Participate in department meetings, curriculum revision, course assessment, program assessment, and program review collaboratively with the human biology team.
  • Engage in regular professional growth activities, remain current in the field, and maintain current credentials or licensures.
  • Participate in service to the college. This may include participating in College committees, taskforces, peer teams, or other activities.
  • Provide meaningful, professional service to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations.
  • Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.   • Demonstrable evidence of excellence in teaching Human Biology as found at a community college. This includes evidence of an on-going pursuit of activities intended to improve teaching skills.
  • Thorough and broad knowledge of the fields of Human Anatomy and Physiology.
  • Ability to use a variety of instructional methods to present curriculum concepts that provide meaningful learning opportunities for a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Ability to observe, direct, and oversee students ensuring safety in the classroom or laboratory.
  • Ability to work constructively with and contribute to a diverse workplace and community.
  • Ability to use technology used in the instruction setting to produce and manage documents and data, to employ course management systems, and to teach traditional, hybrid, or online courses.

  • Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and campus locations, as required.

Ergonomic Requirements
Ability to work in classroom and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
  • Master’s Degree in Physiology, Biology, or closely related field, from an accredited institution; or a minimum of 30 quarter hours (20 semester hours) of graduate credit in academic courses in the field of the primary teaching assignment.

Experience:
  • One year of successful college teaching experience in human anatomy and physiology or evidence for the potential for excellence in teaching.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience:
  • Demonstrated innovation in content delivery, laboratory exercises, and/or student engagement in the community college environment.
  • Additional years of college teaching experience in human anatomy and physiology.
  • Online and/or hybrid course delivery experience.
  • Demonstration of engagement in STEM diversity, equity, and inclusion outreach.
