About This Role:

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences at Lamar University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Geospatial Sciences beginning Fall 2024. Candidates for Assistant Professor should have a PhD or anticipated PhD completion in geospatial sciences, geosciences, or environmental sciences specializing in GIS and remote sensing by August 2024. The successful candidate will teach GIS, remote sensing, and UAV (drone) classes that are required or electives for the M.S. program in Geospatial Sciences and in the Undergraduate and Graduate GIS Certificates. Funded research and presentations/publications are also expected duties of the successful candidate, as well as collaboration with faculty in the department, college, and university on projects requiring a geospatial expert. The successful candidate is also expected to assist in the administration of the Geospatial Sciences M.S. and GIS Certificate programs by advising students in these programs, acting as the thesis advisor for the students or otherwise serving on the thesis committee for students in the Geospatial Sciences M.S. program, conducting yearly assessments of the M.S. and Certificate programs, and conducting other college, university, professional, and community service duties as appropriate. The College of Arts and Sciences at LU includes some 220 faculty, 100 staff members and houses approximately 5,000 majors. The College includes twelve academic departments, many of which house multiple programs and disciplines in the natural and social sciences and humanities. What You’ll Do – Position Responsibilities

  • Develops and teaches remote sensing, GIS, and UAV classes for the Geospatial Sciences M.S. program, both Undergraduate and Graduate GIS Certificate programs, and other programs in the department or across campus where geospatial courses are required or electives for those programs.
  • Assists in directing the Geospatial Sciences M.S. and GIS Certificate programs in conjunction with the Departmental Graduate Committee and department Chair, including course requirements, student recruitment and acceptance into the M.S. and certificate programs, student advisement, and program assessment.
  • Writes research proposals, makes presentations, and publishes research results.
  • Collaborates with the Center for Resiliency and other researchers and centers at Lamar University and elsewhere on projects requiring remote sensing, UAV, GIS, or other geospatial expertise. Collaborates with local community and governmental organizations, if needed, to aid in emergency planning and response.
  • Generates reports, maps, and other technical documents in support of the Lamar Geospatial Center (LGC), co-manages the operation of the departmental computer lab which is used for teaching and research as part of departmental courses and LGC activities, and co-manages the Esri ArcGIS site licenses for Lamar University.
  • Promotes the Lamar Geospatial Center and departmental geospatial degrees to the community and advertises the Geospatial Sciences M.S. program and GIS Certificate programs to encourage student applications.
  • Works with employers to develop geospatial internship opportunities for students as well as making job recruitment trips and career presentations for students at the Department of Earth and Space Sciences.

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
  • An earned Ph.D. degree in the geospatial sciences, geosciences, or environmental sciences specializing in GIS and remote sensing is required.
  • Applicant must have at least 1 year of GIS, remote sensing, or other geospatial science research experience during their doctoral program or afterwards. Field experience with UAV’s and GPS units is desirable. Thorough knowledge of GIS, remote sensing and related computer applications is expected.
