Department Summary
The department offers BA/BS and M.S. degrees in Geography, a newly created BS degree in Geographic Information System and Computer Science (GIS+CS), and undergraduate/graduate certificates in GIS. The department won the AAG’s prestigious Master’s Program Excellence Award in 2017. We also work with the Environmental Science Ph.D. Program and the Department of Philosophy Ph.D. program. UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. Position Summary
The Department of Geography and the Environment at the University of North Texas (UNT) is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in human-environment geography with interests in contemporary issues in human-environment interactions using data-driven methods. We are open to a range of topical interests related to coupled natural-human systems (e.g., socio-hydrology, sustainable transportation, urban environments, public health risk). Relevant expertise includes, but is not limited to, field methods, earth observation, data science and analytics, and mixed-methods approaches. 
 
We seek a candidate who is committed to interdisciplinary teaching and research.  Preferred candidates will demonstrate an ability to teach courses across areas of geography, complement or broaden current areas of expertise within the department and across the University, work well in interdisciplinary teams on grant-funded projects, and mentor students from diverse backgrounds and with varied interests.
To evaluate potential candidates, we will focus on the following criteria:
 
Human-Environment Research: We are looking for individuals with a track record of impactful research that addresses the intricate interactions between humans and the environment.
 
Data-Driven Approach: Candidates should exhibit proficiency in utilizing data-driven methodologies to analyze complex environmental/geospatial data.
 
Teaching Across Geographic Areas: The ability to design and teach courses that span various geographic subjects will be valued, e.g., physical, human, and geospatial.
 
Complementing/Expanding Current Areas: Preferred candidates will demonstrate the potential to contribute to and enhance our 
institution’s existing research areas, creating a well-rounded and comprehensive research portfolio.
 
Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Effective collaboration in interdisciplinary teams is a key aspect we will consider.
 
Grant-Funded Projects: We welcome candidates with a successful track record in or who have a clear plan for securing and managing grant-funded projects.
 
Mentorship of Diverse Students: A demonstrated commitment to mentoring students from diverse backgrounds is essential for creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
