Professor in Food Science. We are looking for a dedicated individual eager to contribute to our institution’s academic excellence and drive innovation in the field of food science, with a research emphasis on utilization of small grains. As an Assistant Professor, you’ll play a role in shaping the future of food science education and research. This position offers a dynamic environment that fosters scholarly inquiry, creative teaching methods, and collaboration with industry leaders and research partners. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota. This position is a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track, benefits-eligible position. 
The Dairy Food and Science department has 9 faculty members, approximately 10 staff members, and 30 graduate research assistants. The faculty and staff within the department bring a wealth of experience, recognized expertise, and a strong dedication to teaching, research, and service. Their commitment empowers undergraduate and graduate students to carve out paths for lifelong and rewarding careers in their chosen fields.
At the heart of this support system lie pivotal resources like the Alfred Dairy Science Hall, the cutting-edge Davis Dairy Plant, and the Young Brothers Seed Technology Lab. These facilities play a central role in facilitating productive interactions between students and faculty. Here, students engage in hands-on experiential learning, spanning activities in milk/food processing, and their practical applications in food-related industries.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Scholarly/Research: 60% Research in the area of food product innovation and development, with emphasis on small grains. The incumbent is expected to develop an independent, extra-murally funded research program that is nationally and internationally recognized through peer-reviewed publications and involvement with food-related scientific organization.
  • Teaching/Advising: 40% Teaching undergraduate and graduate levels Food Science Courses. The courses are to be determined but will include advising and teaching related to food science.
  • Participate in university, college, and department governance and service as well as professional service and outreach activities.

SALARY RANGE:
Salary is commensurate with qualifications. We offer a generous retirement plan that includes 6% matching, 9.34 hours of sick leave each month, and eleven paid holidays. Relocation benefits are available per university’s guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Applicant must have an earned Ph.D. degree in Food Science, or a closely related field by date of appointment.
  • Relevant knowledge and experience in Food Science and Technology and food product innovation and development or ingredient functionality.
  • Experience with grant writing.
  • Ability or potential to teach Food Science courses at the collegiate level.
  • Ability to publish the results of original research in peer-reviewed journals and develop an independent, externally funded research program.
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Post-doctoral experience or international equivalent in related discipline.
  • Small grains experience in fractionation for ingredient development and/or product development experience.
