Job Description

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of New Orleans is seeking a tenure-track assistant professor in the general area of power systems engineering and power electronics.  The faculty member is responsible for educating undergraduate and graduate students, conducting research, and providing service to the department, university, and profession.

UNO is home to the Power and Energy Research Laboratory (PERL) established in 2009.  Recent areas of research at PERL include 1) integration of renewable energy (i.e. solar and wind energy sources) to the electric grid, 2) inverter based resources protection,  3) stability, resiliency, reliability, and security system studies, and 4) hardware-in-the-loop real time modeling and simulation.

Job Summary

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in electrical and computer engineering.

  • Develop and maintain course materials, including syllabi, lectures, assignments, exams, and assessment.

  • Advise and mentor students in research projects, theses, and dissertations.

  • Conduct research in electrical engineering, with a focus on advancing knowledge and solving practical problems in the field.

  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences.

  • Seek and secure external funding for research through grant proposals.

  • Participate in departmental and university service activities, such as committee work, student recruitment, and outreach events.

  • Provide professional service to the electrical and computer engineering community, such as serving on technical committees, reviewing manuscripts, and participating in professional organizations.

Required Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate in electrical engineering with expertise in power electronics, renewable energy systems, application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in power systems, or a closely related area

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • A viable plan to develop and sustain an externally funded research program.

  • Evidence of a commitment to educate undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Commitment to support the diversity, equity, and inclusion mission of the college and university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional licensure or ability to obtain it

  • Professional experience

  • Experience with interdisciplinary research collaborations

  • Experience with online teaching and learning platforms

  • Experience in curriculum development

  • Experience in program assessment
