The Department of English, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics at California State University, Fullerton, invites applications for a tenure‐track Assistant Professor position in Composition and Rhetoric with an appointment to begin Fall of 2024.

Position
We are seeking to hire a tenure-track faculty member with culturally diverse perspectives in Composition and Rhetoric. Areas of preferred emphasis include composition studies, strategies and methods for teaching writing, critical pedagogy, rhetorical theory, and writing program administration. Areas of preferred secondary emphasis include histories of rhetoric; decolonial rhetorics; ethnic rhetorics, which may include Native American and indigenous rhetorics, African American rhetorics, Asian and Pacific American rhetorics, and/or Chicanx and Latinx rhetorics; queer rhetorics; feminist or women’s rhetorics; linguistics; literacy studies; digital/multimodal writing; social justice writing; writing across the curriculum; writing in the disciplines; professional and technical writing; comparative rhetorics; or civic rhetoric. The appointee will be expected to teach a range of courses on writing, language structure, and composition pedagogy at the upper division as well as the graduate (M.A.) levels, in addition to lower-division, introductory, and general education courses in the field of Composition and Rhetoric. The appointee will also develop courses in their specialties, particularly at the senior and graduate levels. Faculty generally teach 3 classes per semester. A reduced teaching load is provided for the first two years. The appointee should also be prepared to participate in the administration of department writing programs, such as writing center administration, TA training, and coordination of upper- and lower-level composition courses. Evidence of an active research program and high-quality teaching is required.
CSUF faculty are committed teacher/scholars who bring research and creative discovery to life for students in classrooms, labs, studios, and individually mentored projects. They teach broadly in the curricula of their departments, advise students, and serve on departmental and university-wide committees. The primary responsibilities of the person in this position will include the development and teaching of introductory and core courses in the discipline and the development of courses in their area(s) of specialization. Specific courses that this person will teach include ENGL 101 Beginning College Writing, ENGL 301 Advanced College Writing, ENGL 307 Advanced College Writing in English Studies, ENGL 590 Writing Theory and Practice, and ENGL 402 Response Theories of Composition among other courses. This person will also be responsible for producing publications commensurate with the requirements for tenure. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to and participate in the life and development of the department, advise students, and actively participate in the broader university and disciplinary communities.
Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric, English, or a related field is required by August 2024. ABDs must show evidence of degree completion prior to appointment.
- Ability to balance teaching, scholarship, and service.
- Evidence of and/or potential for successful, high-quality teaching.
- Active research program with demonstrated evidence of, or clear potential for, high-quality peer-reviewed publication.
- Demonstrated advocacy for or experience working with communities historically underserved and marginalized by educational policies and practices.
- Demonstrated evidence of successful professional experience working with Black/African American, Latinx, low-income, first-generation, or other underrepresented students.
Preferred Qualifications
- Training and/or experience in composition pedagogy and teacher training, course coordination, writing center administration, and/or writing program administration.
- Areas of preferred emphasis include composition studies, strategies and methods for teaching writing, critical pedagogy, rhetorical theory, writing program administration. Highly sought emphases include cultural rhetorics, Native American and Indigenous rhetorics, African American rhetorics, Chicanx and Latinx rhetorics, socio-linguistics and/or digital studies/multimodal writing, histories of rhetoric, decolonial rhetorics, Asian and Pacific American rhetorics, queer rhetorics, feminist or women’s rhetorics, linguistics, social justice writing, writing across the curriculum, writing in the disciplines, professional and technical writing, comparative rhetorics, or civic rhetoric.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated background in Composition and Rhetoric.
- Potential for collegial participation in departmental, campus, and disciplinary communities.
- Potential for collegial participation in administration of department writing programs.

Compensation
The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is $5,405 to $11,994 monthly (12 monthly payments per academic year). The anticipated hiring range is $6,690 to $6,790 per month.
Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work (https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm ).
Summer research grants, moving expenses, start‐up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
