Job Duties
This is a full-time faculty position to serve as the Associate Medical Director for the Inpatient Psychiatry Service. This 52 bed service houses acute beds, combined MI-ID beds, and combined Med-Psych beds in a 900+ bed tertiary care academic medical center serving Eastern and coastal North Carolina. This position will serve as the lead psychiatrist for the Med-Psych program housed in the inpatient service. The hospital provides acute, intermediate, rehabilitation, and outpatient health services to more than 1.4 million people in 29 counties. The position emphasizes a leadership role and an active engagement in clinical, educational, and scholarly activities.
The Associate Director will report to the Medical Director of the Inpatient Service and will be a member of the senior leadership team within the Department. The position offers an excellent blend of administrative and leadership opportunities; clinical care; teaching; and scholarship in this growing, multi-disciplinary, and collegial Department. The position will remain open until filled.
Responsibilities
1. Provide direct care to patients in inpatient and outpatient settings.
2. Serve as the Associate Medical Director for the inpatient program (Behavioral Health Unit) at ECU Health Medical Center and, in this role:
  • Work with the Service Chief, Inpatient Unit (BHU) Administrator, the Inpatient Unit (BHU) Medical Director, and other leadership staff at the hospital and ECU to establish and maintain a unit (Med- Psych Program) that is capable of treating stable medicine patients who have co-morbid psychiatric

  • Work in concert with the Chief of Service, the Medical Director of the Unit, and the Hospital Administration to carry out the policies of the Board of Directors of the Hospital and to review professional standards of practice within the Med- Psych Program.

  • Develop policies and procedures in concert with the Chief of Service, the Medical Director of the Unit, and appropriate departments of the Hospital, the Hospital administration and the medical staff to assure quality patient care, active treatment, appropriate level of professional and technical staff and personnel and review professional standards of practice.

  • Develop in concert with the Medical Director of the Unit and the Hospital appropriate in-service and continuing education programs for the Hospital staff and medical staff.

  • Prove medical leadership for Med- Psych Program through regularly scheduled meetings including participation in the unit leadership management meeting and other committees as requested by the program administrator or unit Medical Director.

  • Review all professional practices within the Med-Psych Program and take appropriate action where indicated.

  • Provide all other services required to ensure that the Med-Psych Program is run in an efficient prudent manner so as to provide patients with the best possible care.

  • Assist the Medical Director in ensuring compliance with the medical staff bylaws of the Hospital by all medical staff members with privileges with respect to the Program.

  • Provide the Chief of Service, the Medical Director, and the Hospital with timely information and reports related to all Med-Psych treatment programs to the extent appropriate and in accordance with the Physician’s primary obligation to ensure confidentiality of certain patient information.

  • Ensure compliance with Program Quality Assurance and Utilization Review (“QA and UR”) policies and procedures.

  • Assist the unit Medical Director in providing direction to hospital and program staff in maintaining those standards of care established by national agencies including the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).

3. Assist in the teaching and clinical supervision of medical students, residents, and other health professional trainees.
4. Collaborate with other faculty members in conducting clinical research, with the opportunity to initiate projects if desired.
5. Function as a University faculty member, performing such duties as are appropriate to academic rank and position.
 | Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b. 457).  This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS). Minimum Education/Experience
  • MD or DO from an appropriately accredited institution, or completed foreign medical education accepted and recognized for ECFMG Certification.
  • Graduate of a medical school approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the AAMC and the Council of Medical Education of the AMA.
  • Graduate of an approved combined medicine-psychiatry or family medicine-psychiatry residency training program or satisfactory completion of training in both internal or family medicine and psychiatry.
  • Board certified or qualified in both psychiatry and internal or family medicine
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the State of North Carolina.
  • Clinical experience working with persons, in inpatient settings, who have significant general medical and psychiatric co-morbidities.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation
Board Certification or eligibility for board certification in both psychiatry and internal or family medicine. 
Eligible to obtain license to practice medicine in the State of North Carolina.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
  • Experience in working collaboratively with other mental health professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Clinical experience working with persons who have developmental disabilities.
  • Experience in conducting clinical research.
  • Experience in medical education.
  • Experience in psychiatric administration and management.
