Advertised Title Assistant or Associate Professor
Campus Location Park Avenue Campus (Memphis, TN)
Position Number 001846
Category Full-Time Faculty
Department Communication Sciences and Disorders
Position Summary
The School of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Memphis is seeking applicants for a tenure-track position in Speech-Language Pathology at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank. Expected start date is August 15, 2024, with earlier start dates possible.
Applicants should be prepared to teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, pursue programmatic research, interact with the clinical and academic programs of the School, advise students, and provide service to the School and University. Applicants must have earned a PhD or other research doctorate by the start date, and clinical certification and eligibility for state licensure in SLP are preferred. Candidates with a record of publications and success or likelihood of success in obtaining extramural funding commensurate with rank will be strongly preferred.
We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in neurodevelopmental speech-language sciences involving applications to pediatric populations with complex communication and/or medical needs. Candidates with interests in related areas, e.g., phonology, neurological bases, multiculturalism, autism, and literacy will be especially competitive, and we also seek new modes and technologies of research and PhD student training. Because our School has established areas of strength in cognitive and neurological sciences and development of language, candidates prepared to build on these strengths are likely to thrive in our setting. Our School is expanding its interprofessional training opportunities, the University provides support for development of online programs, and we especially welcome candidates with diverse lived experiences to join our multicultural community.
Our historically top-ranked program offers graduate degrees in Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, and research-oriented PhDs in SLP, audiology, and neuroscience. We are also establishing a presence in undergraduate education with an emphasis on American Sign Language. The School (www.memphis.edu/csd) is housed in a new building with state-of-the-art teaching, research, and clinical facilities. Many collaborative opportunities exist within the School and with other units in the University, including strong affiliations with the Institute for Intelligent Systems which focuses on interdisciplinary cognitive science, artificial intelligence, developmental, and educational research. We also have strong links to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare system, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and other local clinical, educational, and medical communities.
Consistent with our mission, we seek to recruit, develop, and retain the most talented people from a diverse candidate pool who will increase research, teaching, and mentoring.
We will begin reviewing applications December 15, 2023, and will continue to review applications until the position is filled. For questions, contact search committee chair Lynda Feenaughty at [email protected] or at (901) 678-3555. Interested applicants must upload to the University’s Workforum site: a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching interests and philosophy (including preferred course assignments), a statement of research experience and plans for future programmatic research. Please provide email addresses for three letter of reference writers, unofficial transcripts for PhD (earned or in progress), and selected publications.
