The Department of Communication at CU Denver is a dynamic community of scholars and learners committed to cultivating the knowledge and ability to use communication to create a more equitable and humane world. We offer a BA and MA program and certificates in online, in person, and hybrid formats. We also run an innovative program at the International College Beijing. 


Position Emphasis:

Tenure-track faculty members perform research and service consistent with peer research universities and teach on a 2/2 load.

This position includes three main areas of effort, consistent with peer institutions: 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service.

The primary research and teaching focus of this position will fall within our Global and Intercultural Communication pathway.

In addition to maintaining an ongoing scholarly research agenda and teaching in global and intercultural communication, as well as allied areas, the successful candidate will be expected to develop our global and intercultural curriculum, lead international program development, and mentor learners from our International College Beijing (ICB) and AANAPISI programs.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Communication with an emphasis in intercultural and international communication broadly construed and US-China communication specifically.
  • 10+ years of full-time experience teaching in an international/joint educational environment. 
  • Record of leadership in international/national scholarly associations that bridge US-Chinese scholars.
  • A record of at least 6 peer-reviewed publications related to US-China communication.

Preferred Qualification to possess (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring students from diverse, international cultures.
  • Demonstrated research success publishing in peer-reviewed venues on US-China Communication.
  • Experience teaching English-language university classes in China for extended periods of time.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  •  A history of significant service to the profession when compared to others at the same rank
  • A history of mentorship of students in the National Communication Associate honor society
  • Ability to teach courses related to intercultural/global communication for undergraduates and graduate students in ways that evidence highly effective instruction
  • Ability to sustain an ongoing line of scholarship leading to peer-reviewed publications related to US-China communication in top scholarly venues in communication
  • The potential for funded research
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering diverse, equitable and inclusive environments for learning and discovery, including the ability to engage students and collaborators from racial and ethnic minority populations and other historically marginalized communities as well as contribute to CU’s Denver’s AANAPISI or HSI-knowledge communities
  • Demonstrated experiences translatable to working with students at our International College Beijing campus.

Conditions of Employment
  • Occasional work during the evening and/or weekends may be required.
  • This position follows a hybrid work structure where employees can work remotely or from the office, as needed, based on demands of specific tasks.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at $80,000 – $90,000.  

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
