Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Iowa State University’s Department of Landscape Architecture is seeking a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor. Outstanding applicants may also be considered for tenured positions at the rank of Associate Professor. The position is a full-time (nine month) appointment starting August 16, 2024. The Department is seeking an individual interested in experiential learning/field teaching who will participate as a co-leader of our department’s unique “Savanna” undergraduate student traveling program. We especially welcome candidates who have interest or expertise in ecological systems and their associated technologies, with a scholarly focus on ecological design principles as they apply to terrestrial and aquatic living landscape systems. Teaching duties will include courses in the undergraduate or graduate program and will be determined by aligning the candidate’s interests and expertise with appropriate design studios, lecture-format courses, or seminars.

Position Responsibilities

Design faculty in our department educate students to become successful designers, planners, artists, and scholars who enhance human experience and improve the natural, social, and built environments. Tenure-track faculty in the department typically teach four courses a year, offering two studios and two lecture courses/seminars. Newly hired faculty will receive one course release in their first year. Faculty are expected to produce scholarly outcomes, adding to the research field in landscape architecture. Service on department, college, and university committees is also required, but calibrated to allow pursuit of scholarly inquiry and development of successful course offerings. As members of the multidisciplinary College of Design, faculty members have the opportunity to work collaboratively with others from accredited and nationally ranked degree programs across the university.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

-Accredited professional landscape architecture degree and

-A master’s degree in landscape architecture or an allied discipline

Preferred Qualifications:

-Teaching experience in landscape architecture or other studio-based programs

-Record in professional practice and professional licensure

-Doctoral‐level credentials in LA or related discipline will be given strong consideration

-Relevant research record or evidence of high potential for scholarship

The department offers two accredited professional degrees, the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) which accepts up to 38 undergraduate students annually, and the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) with up to 15 graduate students per class/total. Our pedagogical culture places high value on experiential learning and critical thinking routinely offering travel, independent scholarship and practice, as well as community engagement to produce competent, self-directed and thoughtful practitioners and scholars.
