Assistant or Associate Professor of Academic Success & Director, Bar Preparation

Position Summary:

The University of Dayton School of Law invites applications for one Assistant or Associate Professor of Academic Success and Director of Bar Preparation. This is a non-tenure track position with an initial appointment of one year for an assistant professor or an initial appointment for three years for an associate professor, and the possibility of renewal for long-term (three-year) appointments after three years of satisfactory service for an assistant level or longer term (five-year) appointments after three years of satisfactory service for an associate level.

This is a 12-month position starting May 1, 2024. This is an academic success faculty position with a pathway to promotion that does not hold tenure.

Responsibilities of an Assistant or Associate Professor of Academic Success and Director of Bar Preparation include:

  • staying current with changes to the bar exam across jurisdictions, including developments related to the NextGen bar exam,
  • ensuring that the bar preparation program remains current with developments and changes to the bar exam across jurisdictions,
  • designing and teaching bar examination and academic success courses related to bar examination preparation;
  • leading the administration and assessment of a comprehensive program to support students in preparation for the bar examination;
  • maintaining oversight and provide updates to the Dean and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs regarding various state bar application requirements;
  • counseling students one on one about the bar application process, preparation strategies and strategies for handling stress related to bar preparation;
  • supervising faculty teaching in bar examination preparation courses; analyzing bar exam results and providing regular reports concerning results;
  • providing bar-related information to faculty members regarding topics tested and recent bar exam questions in the faculty members’ area of teaching;
  • serving on faculty, staff, and other University committees;
  • creating reports using statistical data regarding students’ academic performance, entrance data, bar passage results, and other relevant metrics.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school;
  • Passage of a bar examination and admitted to practice law in a U.S. state;
  • Teaching experience which may include tutoring, mentoring, or other forms of instruction.

For the rank of Associate Professor, an additional minimum requirement is:

  • three or more years of teaching that demonstrates sound knowledge of academic support or bar passage pedagogy.
Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • An outstanding academic record;
  • Successful experience in one or more of the following:
    • law teaching, and/or bar examination preparation;
    • working with materials related to the NextGen bar exam and other developments in the administration of bar exams in various states;
    • program administration, especially if the experience relates to bar examination preparation;
    • supervising others’ teaching;
    • creating and/or analyzing statistical data;
  • Effective oral communication skills;
  • Effective written communication skills;
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills;
  • Experience mentoring and/or working with students and other constituents from culturally and socially diverse backgrounds;
  • Commitment to educating the whole person in the Marianist tradition and a commitment to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion and of service to the community, university and profession; and
  • Effective classroom management skills.
