Position Description
Advertised Job Summary | Assistant or Associate Professor and Director of the Center for African American Studies University of South Carolina Upstate FAC00256PO23 Spartanburg, SC Faculty position to teach on the Spartanburg and/or Greenville campus. The University of South Carolina Upstate invites candidates to apply for Director of the Center for African American Studies at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position with a start date of August 16, 2024. The Director of African American Studies will coordinate the African American Studies program, teach two courses per semester, and manage the Center’s curricular and extra-curricular programming focused on the African American experience. The Director will be expected to represent USC Upstate in the community and build relationships that contribute to the intellectual examination of the African American experience in the region, state, and southeastern United States. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong leadership skills in the higher education environment and a commitment to productive and high value engagement with students, faculty, staff, and the community. The University of South Carolina Upstate is a comprehensive public university and a senior institution of the University of South Carolina. Required Education and Experience | To be considered, candidates must possess an earned terminal degree by the start date of the appointment in a discipline relevant to African American Studies and eligible for tenure and promotion at the University of South Carolina Upstate (e.g. art, theatre, communications, literature, history, political science, sociology, nursing, etc.), the ability to teach courses in African American Studies, and a demonstrated record of leadership and service in the African American community. Candidates must have an active affiliation with one or more professional organizations or networks dedicated to African American causes and/or scholarship. ABD candidates with a planned completion date no later than August 15, 2024, are welcome to apply. To qualify for the rank of Associate Professor, candidates must have at least five years of relevant academic experience in their discipline beyond the terminal degree, as well as meet the criteria for Associate Professor in the areas of research, scholarship and service in accordance with the corresponding unit’s criteria for promotion. A successful background check is required. |
