Assistant Lab Manager Civil & Construction Engineering

The Department of Civil & Construction Engineering¿s mission is to provide a world-class education in all offered disciplines and ensuring that a BYU education is spiritually strengthening, intellectually enlarging, and character building, leading to lifelong learning and service (http://aims.byu.edu/). The Assistant Lab Manager plays an important role in achieving that mission. Your responsibilities include supervising instrumentation and data acquisition, maintaining equipment integrity, and overseeing student safety training. It¿s a role filled with variety and challenge, offering the opportunity to contribute to the education and development of our students while supporting groundbreaking research initiatives. What you¿ll do in this position:

  • Oversee instrumentation and data acquisition for student labs and research projects.
  • Travel to field research projects to help with instrumentation and dada acquisition needs.
  • Maintain, replace, and repair shared department laboratory equipment.
  • Assist with office and classroom organization and maintenance, and coordinate storage of materials.
  • Enforce safety standards in lab activities, develop safety training modules, and maintain records.
  • Aid faculty and TAs with lab exercises and train TAs on equipment.
  • Provide technical support to student chapters and competitions.

 

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
  • 2 - 5 years¿ experience with electronics, instrumentation, and data acquisition or applications in Civil & Construction Engineering
  • Data acquisition experience ideally with LabVIEW and National Instruments data collection systems or similar; along with use of related sensors, such as strain gauges, displacement transducers, load cells, thermocouples, pressure plates, etc.
  • Electronic repair skills including ability to troubleshoot circuits and perform repairs on electronic instruments, which requires experience with multimeters, electronic component testing, soldering, and similar skills,
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail
  • Strong commitment to effective student mentoring

Preferred

  • Skills related to the maintenance and repair of gasoline engines and hydraulic systems,
  • Skills related to welding, operation of power and hand tools,
  • Knowledge of applicable safety standards and compliance requirements and/or experience in implementation of safety protocols,
  • Experience with purchasing of industrial equipment and supplies
