Essential Job Duties
University Housing at NC State University seeks an Assistant Director to provide leadership and direction for housing functions of a residential area ranging between 4-8 communities. The residential area oversees between 2,000-2,500 residents, directly supervises 4 Residence Life Coordinators and indirectly supervises 4 Graduate Assistants for Residence Life and all student staff within the residential area. The Assistant Director is responsible for all administrative processes, coordinates internally and externally to manage projects that impact the residential area, and manages area budgets.
The Assistant Director provides leadership within Residence Life and is a member of the University Housing Leadership team. The Assistant Director oversees a portion of the overall University Housing inventory, supporting and implementing University Housing’s mission, vision, and values within their specific residential area. The Assistant Director aids in the development and management of staff and programs that serve the needs of residents in their area of responsibility.
The Assistant Director is responsible for the following:
Supervision
  • Select, train, and supervise 4 full-time Residence Life Coordinators.
  • Provide support for indirect supervisees, including 4 Graduate Assistants for Residence Life, approximately 80 Resident Advisors.
  • Coordinate and facilitate recognition efforts for Residence Life and residential area, as identified.

Area Oversight and Partnerships
  • Provide leadership and direction in residential area and within Residence Life as a part of a highly collaborative, team-based environment.
  • Provide oversight to staff who serve as hearing officers to ensure guidance of the Conduct process.
  • Serve on Village Advisory Councils for Villages in residential area, as identified.
  • Provide leadership in area of responsibility that promotes active partnerships, communication, and collaboration between Residence Life and other units within University Housing.

Residence Education and Student Development
  • Provide leadership to direct and indirect staff and track progress in implementing learning strategies and meeting learning outcomes of residential curriculum.
  • Ensure advisors for the Residential Councils in residential area have necessary guidance and support to develop student leaders.
  • Support Inter-Residence Council and National Residence Hall Honorary as identified.

Crisis and Resident Behavior
  • Provide support to resident behavior through serving in a Director-level on-call rotation.
  • Respond onsite to emergencies as needed.
  • Provide leadership and direct staff response during emergency situations.
  • Communicate with the Office of Student Conduct regarding process management of individual conduct cases.
  • Oversee distribution of caseload within residential area, including conducting regular audits of direct reports.

Facilities Management
  • Oversee facilities ranging from 300,000-800,000 sq. ft.
  • Coordinate maintenance improvements and assessments, including enhancement projects.
  • Serve as a Residence Life representative with contractors and campus partners for renovation and construction projects as needed.

Open and Welcoming Community
  • Foster community among residential spaces comprised of various resident populations.
  • Participate in and encourage staff and resident participation of on-going training related to supporting the needs of the community.

Administration and Financial Management
  • Provide budget oversight for residential area, with responsibility for between $750,000-$1,000,000.
  • Responsible for ensuring timely and accurate completion of administrative tasks within residential area.
  • Develop, update, and/or review processes to promote operational efficiency and standardization of practices.

Departmental Responsibilities
  • Participate in area and departmental decision-making regarding vision setting, policies and procedures, programs, residential experiences, and facilities.
  • Serve as a communication link between University Housing, staff, stakeholders, and residents.
  • Lead and/or serve on University Housing, Division of Academic and Student Affairs, and/or campus partner committees as appropriate and needed.
  • Participate in selection, recruitment, and training for University Housing.
  • Participate in staff searches both internal and external to University Housing.
  • Assist with move-in, transitions, closing, and other Department or University events as needed.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities.
Other Responsibilities
  • This position requires some night and weekend work in order to support the campus community. This position is expected to serve in a Director-level on-call system for the department and may have to respond to campus to provide leadership and support during emergency situations after hours.
  • This position is required to handle confidential information appropriately and is bound by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This position is also a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act as well as reporting responsibilities under Title IX for any crimes of incidents of sex discrimination which they are made aware. 
  • On a specific event/condition basis, the University may also take the unusual measure of “calling-in” employees who are not normally designated as “mandatory” and temporarily assign them to this status.

Although the position is live-out, it requires some night and weekend work in order to support the campus community. Person is expected to respond back to campus within 30 minutes or less to provide leadership and support during emergency situations after hours. The Assistant Director also has the responsibility to return to campus as needed to support live-in staff in responding to major emergencies.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in higher education, college student personnel, counseling, or a related field; a minimum of 3 years post-Master’s degree full-time Residence Life/Housing experience.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Experience developing an open and welcoming community
  • Experience in crisis management response
  • Experience developing and/or maintaining effective campus partners; and supervisory skills which inspire, motivate, and foster a culture in which all staff members are treated with respect and professionalism.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5 years post-master’s degree full-time residence hall experience.
  • Living and learning community experience
  • Strategic planning experience
  • Teaching experience strongly preferred.
