An Assistant Director is a full-time, live off position within University Housing and Residence Life that provides the overall administration of student learning and housing components in an area which houses approximately 1100 students in a comprehensive residential living program. The AD reports to the Director of Residence Life and makes appropriate decisions/or recommendations regarding the management and supervision of their assigned area, and supervises and assists in the development of professional and paraprofessional staff. This position provides an excellent opportunity to enrich the educational experiences of residential students.

Supervision - 20
In conjunction with the Director of Residence Life, lead a team of professional staff and paraprofessional student staff including Community Directors, Community Advisors, and a graduate assistant.
Provide direct supervision for a team of 3-4 Community Directors and support them in their supervision of Community Advisors. Knowledge of effective human resources management practices and supervisory skills, including motivation, training, professional development, conflict resolution and progressive discipline. In addition to individual supervision sessions, AD will hold regular team meetings with staff of assigned buildings.
Clearly define performance expectations, ensure accountability, and provide ongoing informal feedback, coaching and mentoring. Conduct formal performance evaluations.
Programming - 20
Develop a curriculum that meets the academic and social needs of the students who live within the community and create a sense of belonging for students.
Work in collaboration to provide oversight for residence hall budgets under area of responsibility. Provide budget reports monthly.
Coordinate leadership training retreats and workshops throughout each academic year for on- campus student leaders.
Collaborate with the Director of Residence Life to establish policies, procedures, and programs that provide for the safety, security and comfort of residents and ensure an environment that supports academic progress and student success.
Meet regularly with departments across Student Life to determine opportunities for collaborative programming and across the residential community.
Plan professional development for Residence Life professional staff that supports staff understanding of today¿s residential student.
Plan, develop, and implement formal and informal educational and social programs to promote community development among students, staff and campus-wide.
Participate as an active member for institution and department wide committees geared towards implementing restorative justice best practices for student education.
Administration - 20
Serve as a resource for students, parents/support networks and other departments.
Assist in the oversight of recruitment and selection, training, advising and development for the department. 
Establish goals for the year and develop a strategic plan by which the team achieves these goals.
Develop a curriculum that meets the academic and social needs of the students who live within the community.
Maintain high visibility and availability throughout assigned residence halls and promote an inclusive community through role modeling, challenging others and emphasizing respect.
Intentionally and regularly interact with residential students to assess needs of the community. Serve as a student advocate and communicate input to various student life departments.
Reports to Director of Residence Life on concerns/incidents that may include intervention from the CARE Team, Dean of Students Office, and Title IX Investigative Team.
Submit and disseminate statistical reports as requested.
In collaboration with the Chief Conduct Officer and Director of Residence Life, coordinate with CDs to ensure the timely and thorough completion of conduct processes and case workflow.
Set weekly office hours and be available during this time.
Check and promptly return voicemail, email, and other correspondences.
Other - 10
Collaborate with key stakeholders both within Student Life and across the university community to ensure maximum service and success of residential population.
Coordinate social media promotion of residential life events.
Serve on University committees and task forces and respond to and coordinate issues involving Student Life.
Excellent customer service experience, including ability to represent University Housing and Residence Life in a professional and conscientious manner.
Supports the department in all aspects of opening and closing of the residence halls.
Operations - 15
Supervises the opening and closing of assigned residence halls at the beginning and end of a semester and at breaks.
Works with the Coordinator of Occupancy Management and the Associate Director of University Housing for Operations to ensure accurate occupancy reports and implementation of all assignments processes.
Coordinates computerized databases and technical needs of the assigned areas.
Conducts regular health and safety and damage inspections.  Communicates all maintenance and housekeeping problems to the Executive Director of University Housing.
Conducts weekly tours and walkthroughs of residential facilities.
Coordinates with CDs all building management duties including but not limited to room assignments, maintenance/repairs and other housing operational tasks.  Conducts regular key audits and ensures keys are secured and organized.
Emergency Response - 15
Work evenings and weekends as needed and/or directed to support and properly manage departmental functions, student emergencies and crises.  This includes responding to student emergencies including physical and emotional/mental health concerns, facilities issues, student conflicts, and students in crisis/distress.
Participate in the professional staff on-call rotation, providing crisis intervention in emergency situations, including contact with Public Safety, Health and Counseling Services, and provide direction to CDs and CAs.
Facilitate outreach and resource follow-up in coordination with the Dean of Students Office and the Director of Student Care and Outreach.
Assist with resident escalations as they arise.
Provide individual and small group advising and roommate mediation as needed. Must be able to appropriately maintain confidentiality and boundaries.

Educational Requirements
Master's Degree in College Student Personnel, Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, or closely related field
Other Required Qualifications
Ability to work on-call in the evenings and weekends as needed.
Working knowledge of principles, practices, and theories of student learning and development; understanding of the cultural, social, and educational needs of students in residential communities.
Required Experience
5 years of relevant progressive experience in Housing and Residence Life

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Experience with implementation of a residential curriculum and special interest communities preferred.
Demonstrated ability to manage and lead various projects independently and also work effectively as part of a team; must be able to work within a department that values initiative, strong work ethic and teamwork.
Candidate must have a demonstrated knowledge in judicial programs, crisis management, student leadership, student activities.
Experience advising student groups in a college or university environment; experience with NACURH or regional RHA organizations.
Demonstrated skills in leadership, crisis intervention, group dynamics, flexibility, and programming in a residence hall setting.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, students and the general public.
Strong technology skills; experience with creation of spread sheets and data bases as well as word processing programs.
Ability to bend, stoop, climb stairs and lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
Ability to hear, read, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
