Job Summary/Description
The Assistant Director Residence Life and Education has primary responsibilities in Supervision and Training, Administration, Residence Life, Education, Leadership, and Institutional Support, and On-Call/Emergency Response. The Assistant Director Residence Life and Education is responsible for providing high-level development and administrative function for their assigned areas. The Assistant Director of Residence Life and Education is supervised by the Director of Housing and Residential Programs.
Note: All positions are considered a part of the larger team Office of Housing & Residential Programs team. In the event of a vacancy, staff may be asked to fulfill a role or have other job duties added to their position to meet the needs of staff and the department. Typical Duties/Job Duties
Residence Life, Education, Leadership, and Institutional Support
  • Oversight of the Residence Life, Education and Leadership Program (Living Learning Communities/Themed Housing, Residential Tutoring, Residential Programming, and Residence Hall Association).
  • Develop and implement Residential Curriculum, Programming, Staff Training, and Leadership initiatives, Recruit Academic partners.
  • Train, guide and develop Residence Life staff in supporting student academic success, learning outcomes, social adjustment, life skills, wellness, and resource connection for on-campus residents.
  • Provide administrative oversight of departmental databases for Residence Life and Education functions.

Supervision and Training
  • Recruit, train, directly supervise, and evaluate the Residence Life Professional and Student Staff.
  • Conduct one-on-one meetings and contribute to and monitor the professional development of direct supervisees and indirect staff as assigned.
  • Provide indirect supervision and support to Housing & Residential Programs Professional and Student Staff, particularly in relation to assigned functional area

Administration
  • Provide administrative oversite for area functions including but not limited to budget management, residential curriculum, staff training, development and leadership, Maxient and student of concern reporting, and other departmental databases and systems.
  • Assess and report on the effectiveness of area initiatives as well as external comparative data/trend analysis to achieve continuous improvement and meet operational and performance goals.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Advise, chair or serve on departmental committees or liaison opportunities, as assigned.

On-Call/Emergency Response
  • Serve as a member of the Housing Administrative Leadership On-Call Team throughout the academic year, university breaks, and summer for a residential population of over 2000 students.
  • Be available to a call-to-duty status to assist with residence hall and campus emergencies.
  • Support professional staff in responding to crises and providing follow-up.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Housing and Residential Programs and/or student development programs and practices, preferably including First-Year, Sophomore Year and/or special interest housing. Knowledge of standards-based learning outcomes. Knowledge of the principles and practices of standards based assessment. Knowledge of the application of technology in service and content development and delivery. Knowledge of applicable University policies, procedures, and practices; knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision, selection and training,
  • Ability to coordinate the daily activities and operations of a complex administrative process; ability to work effectively and harmoniously with students, parents, and others contacted in the course of work; ability to analyze problems and information and to determine appropriate solutions; ability to respond rationally and appropriately in emergency situations.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring student assistants. Working knowledge of student programming and student development. Experience as a mentor or administering a mentoring program preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated teaching experience or experience leading workshops. Experience working as part of a team. Strong organization and communication skills. Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication. Skilled in interpersonal relations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Education, Counseling, Business, Communication, Computer Science/Technology or a related field of study is required.
  • Progressively responsible positions of leadership, with a minimum of five years full-time, direct experience with full-time supervisory experience, training and development in campus Housing and Residence Life, Student Affairs, Student Activities, Education or other related endeavor required.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a college or university environment i.e. Residential Programs, Student Affairs, university Business Operations, Human Resources or related area is strongly preferred.
