Position Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director of Research Computing, the Assistant Director of Research Computing is responsible for assisting William & Mary (W&M) and Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) faculty/students with computing and computational science initiatives. This includes maintaining W&M/VIMS High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure as well as any new hardware/software used for Research Computing.
Primary responsibilities include (but not limited to):
  • Oversee day-to-day management of W&M/VIMS HPC clusters and Research Computing infrastructure
  • Assist faculty/students with use of W&M/VIMS HPC clusters and other research and academic computing resources.
  • Assist Executive Director with administrative tasks, such as budgeting, security reviews, inventory management, etc.
  • Assist with training, documentation, project tracking, and staff management.
Conditions of Employment
  • This position is subject to additional hours that extend beyond the typical work hours, to include weekend or holiday work.
  • May require occasional overnight travel as needed.

The incumbent is expected to be aware of and adhere to the information security policies of the university as well as all applicable federal, state, and local laws, follow information security best practices applicable to their job area, and to pursue information security training and awareness opportunities when possible.

Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering or a comparable field, or a comparable combination of education and experience
  • Experience managing data centers, supporting HPC clusters, and high-performance computing technologies
  • Strong organizational skills including experience with project management and documentation.
  • ·Extensive experience working with high-performance computing and working with computer hardware/software
  • Experience in programming and shell scripting
  • Expert working knowledge in Linux system administration and best practices in mid-sized, multi-user environments.
  • Knowledge of batch processing, and cluster management,
  • Knowledge of file systems architecture and how to apply to storage and management of research data
  • Understanding of research data management, storage life cycle strategies, and usage and cost optimization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with faculty and students.

  • Ph. D. in relevant science field (Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.).
  • Ability to navigate a complex academic environment with multiple concurrent projects.
  • Experience coaching and managing small teams
  • Extensive experience supporting/performing computational research.
  • Extensive experience in relevant programming languages (especially C, CUDA, and Python) and shell scripting.
  • Extensive experience working with computer/server hardware including Ethernet/InfiniBand switching and GPUs.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform research in an academic setting.
  • Expert knowledge in computational science / mathematical methods.
  • Experience with cloud orchestration techniques, containers, and Kubernetes.
