Description

Reporting to the Director of Projects for Peace, the Assistant Director develops and leads partnership, programming, and training strategies that advance the goals of Projects for Peace. This includes providing expert guidance in the areas of community engagement, intercultural competence, project management, and conflict transformation themes to colleagues at partner institutions around the world, and to their students.

This is a full time, benefits eligible, salaried position with a hiring range of $53,000 to $66,000 annually. It is a grant funded, temporary position that is budgeted through December 2029.


Core Responsibilities:

●      Represent Middlebury and Projects for Peace while advancing partnerships with 100+ US and international colleges and universities in order to grow the program; introduce the Projects for Peace program, clarify mutual expectations and participation criteria, assess outcomes of pilot partnerships, and ensure timely completion of administrative requirements.

●      Propose and implement strategies that foster the development and implementation of meaningful grantee projects, such as: creating inclusive learning opportunities for Projects for Peace constituents by leading in-person, inter-institutional convenings on campus, elsewhere in the US, or overseas; facilitating online/virtual discussions among grantees and/or campus liaisons; identifying guest speakers, curating and sharing pertinent resources, and encouraging reflection and exchange on online platforms

●      Lead the promotion and administration of the annual $50,000 Projects for Peace Alumni Award, including developing a communication campaign, engaging eligible nominating institutions, refining selection criteria, coordinating the work of reviewers, participating in interviews, and providing guidance to the winner(s)

●      Monitor and evaluate programming and partnership activities: set goals, track budgets, assess virtual delivery modalities/platforms, identify and address facilitating or impeding factors, communicate progress.

●      Identify opportunities for Projects for Peace integration/alignment with the Center for Community Engagement (CCE) array of programs and the KW Davis Collaborative in Conflict Transformation. Participate in CCE’s strategic planning meetings.

●      Engage with the broader Middlebury enterprise on its strategic initiatives and priorities by identifying areas of shared interest, coordinate related activities, and respond to requests that promote Projects for Peace and conflict transformation.

●      Apply current and emerging “best practice” national/international community engagement standards and appropriate student development theory to individual work efforts.

●      Supervise one or more student interns; ensure business operations are implemented according to established procedures.

Requirements

●      MA degree in a related field, or BA and extensive experience with relevant program management.

●      Minimum of five years professional experience in higher education and/or international affairs; greater than five years preferred;

●      As this individual will interact with a diverse range of Middlebury College internal and external constituents the following qualifications are required: highly effective interpersonal and media-based communication skills, intercultural competency, cultural humility, flexibility, and ability to work with diverse populations.

●      Demonstrated interpersonal skills and experience working on a collaborative team.

●       At least three years’ experience leading co-curricular, collaborative programs, and facilitating training with an emphasis on global partnerships, cultural immersion and exchange, development of global awareness, and intercultural competence. Experience in developing and/or directing international experiential learning and community engagement programs strongly preferred.

●      Demonstrated understanding of best practices for higher education community-based experiential and project-based learning programs including integrative learning, on-line engagement, curricular flexibility, inclusivity, equity, and reflection.

●      Demonstrated knowledge and commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. Includes experience working with historically underrepresented communities and knowledge of the barriers facing historically underrepresented communities, including people with disabilities, people of color, first-generation, low-income, queer, transgender, gender non-conforming, international, immigrant, undocumented, or tribal and indigenous communities.

●      Capacity to thoughtfully, effectively and appropriately represent the institution in complex, internal and external coalitions and partnerships, with attention to risk management.


Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards.

Occasional calls outside of business hours to accommodate global partners.

This is a hybrid position that requires some physical presence on campus and also allows for remote work based on the requirements of the department.
