The Jones Center for Leadership and Service within the Division of Student Life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville invites applications for the position of Assistant Director. This is an exempt, full-time, non-tenure track, staff position.

 

The Jones Center for Leadership & Service seeks to engage students in transformational learning experiences that inspire a commitment to socially responsible leadership and service. The Position: The Assistant Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of student leadership development programs and initiatives within the JCLS and will serve as the department’s primary liaison and consultant for campus collaborations supporting student leader development. Key duties include providing direct supervision, evaluation, and guidance to Educational Specialists and their respective program areas. The role involves designing, developing, and delivering comprehensive leadership education through retreats, workshops, training sessions, and other formats, with a focus on implementing CliftonStrengths activities across campus. The position partners with the Division of Student Life to facilitate Strength’s training for student staff and supports the rollout of campus-wide leadership programs. Additional responsibilities include consulting with campus partners on leadership/professional development, needs assessments, team building, and implementing solutions based on data analysis.

Primary Responsibilities:

-          Provide direct supervision, performance evaluation, and feedback for at least one Educational Specialist and oversight of respective program areas.

-          Design and deliver comprehensive leadership development education through retreats, sessions, workshops, and other formats.

-          Serve as the chair of the CliftonStrengths Campus Facilitation Team and develop and implement comprehensive CliftonStrengths training activities, workshops, and programs for all students.

-          Partner with departments throughout the University to develop and facilitate Strengths-based training for student staff, combining NACE and student leadership competencies.

-          Support the development and rollout of campus-wide leadership initiatives like the "Leadership for All Vols" and “Vol Edge” programs.

-          Consult with campus partners to provide leadership and professional development sessions, needs assessments, and team-building activities.

-          Implement solutions identified from needs analyses, exit surveys, and engagement data.

-          Stay current on progressive leadership development theories, training methods, certifications, flexible learning formats, and program evaluation.

-          Work occasional evenings and weekends as required to support programs and events.

 

[TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT] Consult with internal and external training providers to design and deliver comprehensive leadership and service education (ex: courses, workshops, and other training and development opportunities) for student leaders across campus; Collaborate with a team of faculty/staff in development, delivery, and ongoing curriculum improvement to provide intensive training to student leaders; Provide 1-on-1 CliftonStrengths and leadership coaching for students leaders; Stay current on progressive and cutting-edge leadership development theories and programs, effective training resources, certifications, flexible and varied community engagement, evaluation, audit and monitoring of learning/training activity.

[LEADERSHIP, SERVICE, & OUTREACH] Assist the Director and Associate Director with oversight and management of the department as a member of the JCLS Leadership Team; Serve as the chair of the CliftonStrengths Campus Facilitation Team; Provide primary oversight for student leadership development programs, including CliftonStrengths for Leaders and Leadership for All Vols; Guide planning efforts and risk management assessment for major programs and events associated with student leadership retreats, workshops, and other leadership-focused programming; Develop/Implement strategies to expand student leadership education and outreach efforts; Consult with internal and external stakeholders to support the design and development of a campus-wide leadership framework; Serve as a key member of the Disaster Relief Management Team as well as various university and community committees, commissions, and boards to support the leadership education and development efforts of the university.

[HUMAN RESOURCES & SUPERVISION] Provide direct supervision, performance evaluation, and feedback for 1 educational specialist in the JCLS; Indirectly supervise graduate assistants, practicum students, and 150+ student leader staff, which includes travel to support student leaders at conferences, retreats, and events; Guide the development and implementation of a robust leadership training program for departmental student leaders focused on developing career-ready competencies utilizing CliftonStrengths; Manage and maintain risk management protocol and materials for signature programs related to leadership and outreach.

[STRATEGIC THINKING, ASSESSMENT, & EVALUATION] Lead strategic planning and implementation efforts related to increasing student access to leadership development programs and opportunities; Responsible for the department's assessment protocol and data analysis processes for student leadership development programming; Evaluate effectiveness of programs and makes modifications to program curriculum as appropriate based on assessment; Track student engagement trends; Identify trends and suggest improvements to programs, publications, and registration software; Assist with department strategic planning and implementation of initiatives that directly support the leadership and service goals of the University and Division's strategic plans; Contribute to department assessment to evaluate student learning, student development, and stakeholder perceptions; Assist with preparing department publications, annual assessment reports, and special reports for department namesake donors, Clay and Debbie Jones.

[FINANCE & BUDGET] Develop and manage CliftonStrengths, Leadership for All Vols, and leadership development program operating budgets; Direct oversight of program expense, revenue, endowment, and gift accounts, assuring full compliance with University fiscal policies and procedures; Manage the W. Timothy Rogers Student Leadership Travel Fund application and award process; Collaborate and negotiate with off-campus sites for retreats, excursions, participant programs, etc. to ensure positive fiscal stewardship; Develop and implement fee waiver process (in collaboration with Financial Aid) for students demonstrating financial need for leadership development activities; Assist with developing and presenting the annual funding request proposal; Make recommendations and assist in planning of annual fund initiatives, outreach, and donor recognition events.

Qualifications

 

What We Require:

Education: Master’s degree

Experience: 3 years of relevant, progressively responsible experience in a related field. (2 years of a graduate assistantship counts as 1 year of experience.)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong interpersonal, communication (oral/written), and listening skills, including leading presentations; Demonstrated knowledge and application of student development, leadership, and service-learning theory; Strong student advocacy skills of community building; Ability to work and collaborate with internal and external constituents to foster positive and productive relationships and build strong rapport to further enhance the departmental vision and mission; Strong work ethic, organization, and initiative; Experience with event and retreat planning; Ability to show initiative and make sound decisions; Ability to incorporate principles of diversity and/or social justice into decision-making processes.

 

What We Prefer:

Education: Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Education or related field

Experience: 3 years of professional work experience in student life, higher education administration, non-profit management, and/or leadership education.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Direct coordination and oversight of leadership development and/or community engagement programming; Supervision, coaching, and evaluating student and/or staff members; Curriculum development and classroom instruction; CliftonStrengths coaching certification; Budget/fiscal management; Assessment and evaluation experience.

Salary: This is a MR09 position. Starting salary is $51,000 and is commensurate with experience and other qualifications and is accompanied by a standard university benefits package. This is an exempt, 12-month, full-time, non-tenure track staff position.
