Position Title ASSISTANT DIRECTOR / LGBTQ & GENDER EQUITY
Position Summary
The Assistant Director reports to the Executive Director for Institutional Diversity & Inclusion and is responsible for providing advisement, initiatives, programs, referrals, and training. The Assistant Director will advocate for inclusion and equity around issues of sexual orientation and gender identity and facilitate and plan programming centered around LGBTQ+ initiatives. This position is additionally charged with fostering collaborations with various divisions such as academic affairs, recruitment and retention and student success, and other units within the division of student affairs. This office is located in the Center for Student Inclusion and Diversity.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
One year of full-time professional experience in higher education or another organization, specifically working with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender programs or communities.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ issues and the intersections of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identities and expressions, and other areas of diversity.
Demonstrated ability to work with the LGBTQ community and other diverse populations.
Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, evaluate, and assess programs and services related to LGBTQ communities.
Record of strong organizational and administrative experience.
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication.
Effective conflict resolution and mediation experience.
Effective analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree.
Three years of full-time professional experience in higher education LGBTQ programs.
Budget oversight and administrative management experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills including the ability to analyze data, evaluate programs and procedures, and interpret information.
Duties & Responsibilities
Provides leadership in the development, implementation, evaluation and assessment of a diverse and comprehensive range of services and programs, including coordination of educational outreach programs for students, faculty and staff.
Plans, moderates, and engages with classroom and residence life lecturers, panels, and resources on LBGTQ and Gender Justice issues.
Oversees production of materials to raise campus awareness of LGBTQ services and resources and maintains awareness of the needs and quality of life of LGBTQ students, staff and faculty.
In consultation with the Executive Director for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, develops the brand and vision for the Office of LGBTQ Services and the Gender Equity Programs Office.
Develops and implements department budget, management of fiscal resources, and supervises undergraduate student staff.
Actively seeks grant, foundation and gift funds in collaboration with the Institutional Diversity unit to enhance programs and services as well as training programs for the institution in regards to LGBTQ and Gender Justice programming.
Provides information, referrals, advocacy and support to LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff, including the on-going development and maintenance of a resource library; consults with students, faculty, staff and others on LGBTQ issues to promote an inclusive, healthy and safe environment that enhances the educational experience and overall quality of community life.
Provides Social Justice Dialogue opportunities to faculty and staff as part of an ongoing effort to enhance the inclusive campus community as part of the Office for Diversity and Inclusion?s Strategic Directions initiative.
Serves as a liaison to Residence Life as a representative for the Trans community and on Gender Equity and Gender Justice issues for on-campus residents; develops training for all new and returning RA/MA staff for Residence Life, including Safe Zone Training and Social Justice/Gender Justice Trainings.
Advises registered student organizations, specifically Transcend; provides support in leadership and identity development and growth opportunities for all students in the organization.
Connects with community partners to ensure proper medical care is available to LGBTQ students, specifically Transgender students as they seek medical transition.
Provides curriculum review to faculty seeking to offer a more inclusive educational opportunity to students.
Fosters an environment to successfully house internship opportunities for students from Social Work, Recreation, Public Relations, and Family
Studies within the context of LGBTQ Services and the Gender Equity Programs office.
Provides a critical social justice lens to programs and educational offerings by the Office of LGBTQ Services and Institutional Diversity.
Collaborates with community partners, (i.e., HR, CMU Police, the Office for Diversity Education, Enrollment Management) to offer social justice trainings and other educational opportunities.
Creates programming for campus community to align with Gender Equity goals.
Plans, implements and leads programs to increase involvement of the LGBTQ+ student population.
Plans, implements and leads programming around gender equity.
In collaboration with the CSID and MASS staff, develops and facilitates trainings for students, faculty, and staff on LGBTQ+.
