Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | Carolina Union Mission Statement: The Carolina Union creates safe, inclusive and educational experiences that enable students to maximize their time at Carolina. Carolina Union Purpose: The many co-curricular programs, services and facilities supported by the Union are developed and operated with a focus to serve the students whose fees fund our organization and therefore are intended to impact the intellectual and experiential climate of the University and provide opportunities for campus members to engage in debate, conversation, interaction, and learning. Managed by 44 full time staff and over 185 student employees, the Carolina Union builds a sense of community as a unifying force on campus and provides students the space and resources needed to put theory into practice. |
Position Summary | The Assistant Director for Student Activities is responsible for the leadership, development, and supervision of Student Life and Leadership programming activities. Additionally, this position will directly advise the Carolina Union Activities Board (CUAB), the University’s student activity programming board, and supervise its two graduate coordinators. The position shares responsibility for the development and implementation of impactful programs designed to enhance the social and co-curricular environment at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This role will ensure programmatic success, participant safety, and fiscal responsibility through budget oversight. This position will lead initiatives on key department and University-wide events such as Weeks of Welcome, Homecoming, FallFest, Student Organization Leadership Experience (S.O.L.E.), Jubilee, Carolina After Dark and late-night events. The Assistant Director for Student Activities will be a liaison to various departments, local and campus partners, and student organizations for collaborations and activation of the Carolina Union art galleries. The role will serve on departmental, divisional, and university-wide committees as assigned and establish meaningful goals and learning outcomes. Additionally, the Assistant Director for Student Activities will engage in professional development activities, maintaining a commitment to personal growth, and seek to be active in professional associations closely related to the position such as the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA). This position is part of Student Life and Leadership in the Carolina Union and will report to the Associate Director for Involvement and Activities. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | * Demonstrated understanding of risk management related to the activities and operations of student organizations.* Ability to utilize technology in the delivery of student programs.* Work-related experience with a focus on student development or higher education administration.* Demonstrated leadership and effectiveness working with staff as a team and with students. * Commitment to working within an innovative environment that is focused on the education of individuals and groups of college students within a college union setting through the development of cohesive employee staff and other leadership initiatives.* Excellent organization, interpersonal, and oral/written/presentation skills. * Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.* Demonstrated ability and willingness to work periodic evening and weekend hours. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | * Experience working with a Curricular Approach to student development.* Experience in developing learning outcomes, assessment plans and conducting assessment projects.* Demonstrated ability in assessment of student services and use of assessment results to make changes that improve the delivery of services and programs for students.* Knowledge of student development theory, issues, and best practices in the field of student affairs.* Experience working effectively with administrative and academic partners within a university. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities | This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
