Primary Purpose of Department
The Department of University Recreation is a vital component within the Division of Student Affairs on the campus of UNC Charlotte. University Recreation is responsible for the promotion, organization, and administration of structured and self-directed programs, facilities and services to enhance positive recreation and wellness lifestyles of the University community. One of the primary responsibilities of the department is to provide opportunities for participation in a variety of recreational activities and physical fitness programs which satisfy the diverse needs of students, faculty and staff, as well as, where appropriate, guests, alumni, and community participants. University Recreation is committed to promoting the on-going development of lifetime wellness habits associated with physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being. Moreover, University Recreation seeks to provide a framework for educational, leadership, and development opportunities through participation and employment in recreational programs.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Assistant Director of Intramural Sports position is an integral part of the ongoing functions of the University Recreation Department. Within the Department of University Recreation, it provides a strategic and integrated approach to effectively provide organized activities for a diverse campus community year-round. Student opportunities in areas such as leadership, social and physical wellness and healthy lifetime habits are maximized through participation, various employment positions, internships, and graduate assistantships. They will be accountable for contributing to a positive, friendly work environment that encourages, enhances and demonstrates collaboration, teamwork and professionalism among staff, students and patrons on a daily basis. He/she will direct and administer services for students, faculty and staff that create a safe, positive environment and enhance students’ educational experiences inside and outside of the classroom.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of University Recreation for Intramural Sports is responsible for the organization, administration and supervision of the UNC Charlotte Intramural Sports Program. The responsibilities encompass a wide variety of administrative and supervisory duties in the areas of budget, personnel, risk management, computerized database management, policy and procedures development, assisting with publicity/promotions, programming and fiscal/statistical management. Position reports to the Associate Director of University Recreation.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Recreation, Sports Administration/Management, Physical Education, or related field and two years of experience developing collegiate/intramural officiating and intramural program.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in a campus recreation environment (2 graduate assistantship years of experience will be accepted as ONE year) related to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated Microsoft Office competency
  • Experience with management and personnel software such as, but not limited to ShiftPlanning, Blackboard, Connect2, Market Place and IM Leagues.
  • Experience in the training of sports officials.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated administrative skills in: budget development and fiscal/statistical management; planning, implementing and evaluating programs; risk management.
  • Ability to motivate and supervise professional and student staff.
  • Direct experience working with league scheduling software.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Experience supervising a full time position
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience working in a university/college recreational sports setting.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment that values high expectations, accountability, and dedication to risk management
Necessary Certifications/Licenses
  • Ability to become a Certified Instructor for First Aid, CPR, AED, and Blood Borne Pathogen within 4 months of employment
Preferred Certifications/Licenses
  • NIRSA CRSS and/or RCRSP
