Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Academic Advisor in the College of Engineering, Office of Student Development and Success, provides advising services for undergraduate College of Engineering majors. The Assistant Director for First-Year Advising & Academic Development will manage a caseload of students, providing academic support and academic skills development to Lee College of Engineering first-year students.
The Academic Advisor in the Lee College of Engineering's Office of Student Development and Success will assist first-year students in their educational goals. Advisors must have the ability to work autonomously in a complex, team-oriented academic office with a significant advising caseload. The following list provides examples of the most typical duties for the advisor position.
- Provide academic advising to first-year students majoring in the Lee College of Engineering
- Assist with new student orientation
- Advise students individually and/or in groups regarding Major course requirements, course selection, academic policies and procedures, and academic resources.
- Collaborates with OSDS advising team for assessing and instructing first-year College of Engineering students on academic skills strategies
- Track and intervene with students who have received multiple Early Alerts to assist them in adopting strategies for academic success.
- Serve as the primary Academic Advisor for a cohort of first-year students starting in a lower math level
- Guide the understanding and sequencing of academic requirements, navigating academic policies and procedures, developing long and short-term goals, preparing for course selection and registration, and monitoring academic performance and degree progression.
- Coaches, monitors, and advises students experiencing academic difficulty and/or those on academic probation
- Teaches seminars on skills and related topics for academic success
- Participates as a member of the Engineering Program for Academic Support and Success (EPASS) student intervention team and related efforts
- Serves as OSDS Advising Systems Liaison
Minimum Experience / Education:
Education: A master's degree in academic advising, student services, higher education, engineering, or a related field is required.
Experience: 4+ years of experience involving student academic advising in a higher education setting, preferably involving extensive direct transfer student advising/counseling in a higher education setting.
Preferred Education Skills and Experience:
The candidate must also be attentive to detail, possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize while multi-tasking, and manage tasks in an efficient and timely manner. Excellent communication and interpersonal problem-solving skills are a must. Ability to interact effectively with advisees, staff, and faculty required. A viable candidate must comprehend and abide by federal and university student confidentiality requirements. Proficient use of computers (Microsoft Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is necessary.
A working knowledge of BANNER, Starfish, and DegreeWorks is a plus.
