Assistant Director for Counseling (S-Z) - Office of Student Financial Services - Georgetown University  

The Office of Student Financial Services (OSFS) for Georgetown’s Main Campus and our School of Continuing Studies provides counseling and application processing services to 14,500 potential and current undergraduate and graduate applicants for aid each year, most of whom make multiple inquiries or visits each year. We manage an active caseload of 9,300 clients each year (currently enrolled students) and administer the Main Campus scholarship, loan, and work programs. 

Job Overview

This Assistant Director for Student Financial Services Counseling manages approximately 1,250 financial aid applicants each year, in responsibilities such as application processing/audit, financial counseling, monitoring enrollment status, and reviewing requests for additional aid in unusual or emergency circumstances.  

With moderate supervision from the Associate Director for Counseling (S-Z), this Assistant Director delivers counseling services to current and prospective students and their families regarding the financial aid process, procedures, and program rules, including information about all federal, state, private, and institutional loan, grant and work programs.

For students with last names beginning with letters S through Z, this Assistant Director is responsible for preliminary review and processing of financial aid applications, maintenance of all financial aid records, and for written and verbal communication with students to ensure the highest standards of customer/client services and support established procedures to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and University policies.

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

Student Counseling Financial Services is one of five lines of business of the Office of Student Financial Services, providing financial aid counseling to diverse student and parent populations and working closely with other University departments to ensure quality service is provided. 

Reporting directly to - and receiving moderate supervision from - the Associate Director of Counseling for Caseload S-Z, this Assistant Director is one of five Assistant Directors who comprise the Student Financial Services Counseling team.

They frequently communicate and interact with prospective applicants for admission to Georgetown’s Main Campus programs, as well as with enrolled students.

This position has been designated as Hybrid. Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Part-time or full-time work experience with counseling, customer service, and/or administrative support
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and analyze data and to use independent judgment where appropriate
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work with a diverse client population, and a commitment to continuous quality improvement and customer services.
  • Experience with and knowledge of PC based administrative software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Any combination of experience with Ellucian’s Banner, COGNOS, and/or Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and/or institutional financial aid program rules, regulations, or processes
