Job Description
The Child Development Center is a state-licensed, full-service childcare facility. The Assistant Director/Child Development Specialist helps facilitate learning and provides guidance and care to children; assists with supervision of teacher assistants; and works in partnership with administration, parents, co-teachers, and specialists as appropriate in the best interest of each child.
 
Job Functions:
  • Instruct children individually and in groups. Foster and encourage development of age appropriate skills in various domains. Develop individual learning goals with each child and work with them towards mastery of skills. Observe and evaluate children's performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Develop, prepare, implement and evaluate developmentally appropriate weekly classroom curriculum according to each child’s needs, learning goals and early learning standards, with clearly articulated objectives for all lessons, units, and projects.
  • Manage a childcare room(s) if needed in case of teacher absence and assist in managing outdoor areas to ensure a safe, clean, healthy, supportive environment including meeting strict hygienic and safety expectations, while facilitating learning activities and creative play. Organize and label materials and display children's work in a manner appropriate for their sizes and perceptual skills. Maintain accurate and complete records and prepare reports on children and activities as required.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning, following predetermined curricula. Recommend and enforce rules for behavior, and policies and procedures to maintain schedules between classrooms and order among children. Assist in creating culturally appropriate programs.
  • Conduct assessments of each child, including identifying emotional, developmental, social, legal or health-related concerns. Confer with parents or guardians, other teachers, child development specialists, and administrators to determine best course of action and/or resolve students' behavioral and learning problems.
  • In addition to daily contact, meet regularly with parents and guardians to discuss children's progress, determine priorities and resource needs, and provide educational information. Conduct parent/teacher conferences. Maintain discretion and confidentiality of child and family information at all times.
  • Fulfill required annual training hours. Ensure certifications and qualifications are met on a continual basis, including Department of Elementary and Secondary Education certification, Department of Health licensing, First Aid/Infant CPR, and Food Handlers certification.
  • Maintain proper documentation for injury, medication authorization, illness, and suspicious incidents. Take precautions to ensure the health and safety of all children, parents, staff and self.
  • Other duties are required as assigned. Additional responsibilities include understanding and fulfilling responsibilities as a mandated reporter; attending professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence; and attending staff meeting and serving on committees assigned.

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

  • Bachelor's degree in early childhood education or child development
  • Proficiency in working with office and educational software
  • Ability to communicate professionally both in writing and verbally, including the ability to convey sensitive, difficult information to parents and maintain confidentiality
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds to lift children
  • Position requires the physical agility and ability to walk, stoop, bend, squat, sit on the floor, and perform activities with children, for extended periods of time, including assuming postures in low level positions that best allow physical and visual contact with children and to move promptly from a seated position to a standing position
  • The Center environment includes both indoor and outdoor areas and activities, which requires the ability to be outdoors for regular, prolonged activities
  • Ability to pass all applicable background and medical screening tests
