Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience. The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director’s Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics and promotes the department’s guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.
The Department of Athletics sponsors a broad-based athletics program that provides educational and athletic opportunities to approximately 800 student athletes through participation in 28 sports. The Department has a budget of over $100M million with 250 full-time staff. The Department assumes financial responsibility for its program, accepting the obligation to generate without state funds the resources necessary to operate as an auxiliary service of the University. 
The Athletic Business Office is responsible for monitoring the financial status of the Department of Athletics, which has a very complex financial structure, with many different approval levels and accounts. The Business Office serves as the financial hub of the Department, including 
developing and administering the Department budget. Other functions include receiving and recording funds for deposit; reviewing and approving requests for purchases; auditing transactions for accuracy and compliance with rules and regulations; account reconciliation; managing communication devices; monitoring and recording inventory; securing adequate insurance coverage for student-athletes and for buildings and contents; financial reporting and analysis; long-range planning; providing support to internal and external auditors; and developing processes and procedures for Department staff members.
Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is facilitating the majority of all payments under $5,000.00 via vouchers for an $95 million dollar budget, process all travel reimbursements for a 250 person department (including significant amounts of recruiting travel for head and assistant coaches) and provides operational support to four different sports. This includes budget management and oversight, financial reporting, analyzing of expenses and revenue; direct, honest and accurate communication with head coaches. Position assists in reconciliation/auditing of departmental transactions to ensure compliance with NCAA, ACC, State and institutional regulations.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Business and Records Administration:
-Thorough knowledge of accounting practices.
-High proficiency level with Microsoft Office, including Word, Access, PowerPoint, and in particular, Excel.
-High level of knowledge of various revenue streams and expenditures for Athletics as an industry.
-Thorough understanding of University financial and reporting systems.
-Robust knowledge of University and state, Atlantic Coast Conference, NCAA and Athletic Department policies and procedures.
-Ability to serve as department liaison for University policy and procedure.
Financial Management:
-Strong aptitude for assembling and compiling pertinent data for presentation to coaching and administrative staff.
-Reporting monthly budget versus actual information for operating, recruiting, special and endowment account for assigned sports.
-Strong analytical skills and experience with data analysis and problem solving.
-Intense detail to attention and accuracy.
Information Processing and Decision-Making:
-Strong organizational and time management skills to set priorities and to ensure meeting scheduled deadlines.
-Ability to handle multiple activities or interruptions at once and to work positively and effectively within a team or self-directed model.
-Ability to conduct research in addressing situations and unique problems.
-Ability to contribute significantly to Athletic Department policies and procedures for staff manual.
Communication:
-Ability to communicate effectively with diverse, and sometimes irate, individuals and to handle calmly and efficiently situations ranging from routine to emergency.

-Ability to maintain favorable public relations with department staff and university officials.
-Maintains confidentiality of financial and personal information.
-Ability to defend presented financial information to coaching staff and administrative personnel.
-Ability to provide excellent service to internal and external customers.
Planning and Organizing Work/Supervision:
-Leads unofficial work teams consisting of administrative personnel, head and assistant coaches, university personnel (disbursement, accounting and purchasing personnel) in accomplishing business goals and objectives for the Athletic Department.
Trains administrative personnel in relation to business functions.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prefer experience in Business Administration, Accounting or related field and experience working in a NCAA Division I Athletic Business Office
Required Licenses/Certifications
Valid NC Driver’s License
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to lift/move 25 lbs or greater. May be required to navigate stairs. Attention to detail essential. Ability to meet deadlines. Ability to provide clear, concise and accurate information.
