ROLE of the POSITION

The Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV Department of Surgery is recruiting for an Acute Care, Trauma Surgeon, at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.

The Acute Care Surgeon is responsible for trauma, surgical critical care, burns, and emergency general surgery. Duties include active clinical participation on the surgical University Medical Center (UMC) team and call schedule, student and resident teaching, and research, and all within the global mission of developing and expanding the program in its clinical and academic spheres.

The candidate will be expected to participate in the education of medical students, surgical residents and fellows, and the pursuit of scholarly activities is expected. They will need to demonstrate practical interpersonal and communication skills and be committed to ongoing performance improvement. Dedication to enhancing a diverse workforce and academic environment is vital. They should be able to collaborate effectively with other clinicians. Evidence of clinical competence and competence in clinical and didactic teaching and research is expected.

The position will include teaching and research opportunities in surgical simulation and skills training in the 33,000 sq. ft. Clinical Simulation Center of Las Vegas. Participation in national meetings related to trauma Surgery, will be encouraged and supported.

PROFILE of Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine

Located primarily within the Las Vegas Medical District, the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV graduated its first class of students in May of 2021. Fully accredited, the school currently has 240 medical students, 150 faculty physicians, and more than 300 medical residents and fellows. With a new medical education building opening in 2022, including state-of-the-art medical classrooms and simulation center, the school continues to grow.

As one of the most diverse medical schools in the nation, our graduates have been accepted to prestigious residency and fellowship programs throughout the country. Our faculty, students, residents, and fellows have had their research published in peer-reviewed journals that range from the American Journal of Surgery to Cancer Cytopathology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position requires a MD, or DO, degree from a regionally accredited college or university and be Board Certified in Surgery prior to start date. Candidates must be eligible for an unrestricted Nevada medical license, malpractice insurance, and must be able to be successfully credentialed by affiliated teaching hospitals. A minimum experience of 3 years as an Academic attending surgeon is required. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.

The candidate's educational credentials, terminal degree, experience in an academic medical institution or equivalency will be considered in determining that candidate's recommended rank. The SOM Faculty Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure (FAPT) Committee will use the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV (SOM) promotion criteria to recommend rank to the Dean of the SOM. Tenure consideration may be given upon hire on a case by case basis depending on verified previous credentials, the FAPT recommendation, and SOM Dean's recommendation.
