Department | Dept of Clinical Sciences |
About the Department | The Department of Clinical Sciences is dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging the animal-owning public, government and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health. North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a dynamic community whose members are dedicated to preparing veterinarians and veterinarian scientists while advancing animal and human health from the cellular level through entire ecosystems. With over seventeen clinical services staffed by board certified specialists, many of whom are not only nationally but also internationally renowned, the NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH) is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 36,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from CVM, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine. |
Essential Job Duties | NC State has had a well-established Theriogenology service with substantial contributions to the teaching, research, and clinical missions within the College. Recent changes in staffing create space for enthusiastic candidates to rebuild and re-envision what a productive service looks like. The CVM is seeking qualified candidates for two tenure track theriogenology faculty positions – one to be hired at the rank of assistant professor, and the other is open for hiring at the rank of either assistant or associate professor. Expectations for both positions are that the incumbents will each contribute 24-26 weeks per year of clinical service in our hospitals, participate in the DVM curriculum through didactic courses and clinical rotations, and establish an independent yet collaborative research program. The incumbents will also participate in training house-officers (residents and interns). Long-term expectations are for the service to function with a minimum of 2 faculty members, and to provide clinical service at the NC State Veterinary Hospital (equine and canine) and our satellite facility, the Theriogenology clinic at Reedy Creek Farm, both of which are located in Raleigh, NC. At present, the breakdown of species routinely examined by the Theriogenology service is about 50% equine and 50% canine, which is the desire moving forward. That said, candidates who would prefer to focus on either equine or canine theriogenology are welcome to apply and would be given the opportunity to succeed in our environment. Primary skills we desire to have on-site for clinics and teaching include canine breeding management (in-house progesterone testing, vaginal cytology, TCI, ultrasonography, semen collection and cryopreservation) and management of equine and canine reproductive diseases, with a focus on high-risk pregnancies in both species. Specific responsibilities at the Reedy Creek Farm include supervision of recipient herd for embryo transfer cases, breeding management and embryo transfer of client owned mares, oocyte collection (transvaginal and post-mortem) for ICSI, Pregnant Mare Foal-watch service, as well as semen collection, semen cryopreservation, and stallion training of client owned stallions. Oocyte collection (transvaginal and post-mortem) for ICSI is a developing program. The service also provides consulting on reproductive conditions of other species, including ruminants, camelids, and exotic species. Clinical teaching will involve teaching 4th year students, enrolled in the theriogenology rotation. The hired individuals will mentor residents to become board certified by the American College of Theriogenologists. Didactic teaching will involve lectures and laboratories in the Comparative Theriogenology course taught to all 3rd-year students, as well as species-specific advanced elective and selective courses. |
