Assistant, Associate or Full Professor (Clinical non-tenure track) Professional DVM Program in Veterinary Medicine

The Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department (VBSD) in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences (CAFES) at South Dakota State University (SDSU) invites applications to apply for several 9-month full time (or part-time), non-tenure-track positions in the new Professional (DVM) Program in Veterinary Medicine (PPVM). Candidates will be assigned the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor depending on qualifications. Associate or Full Professor status may be considered if the candidate has significant proven capabilities in teaching, diagnostics, or research.
These clinical teaching positions could also contribute to the research and scholarly mission of the university and/or provide service such as within the diagnostic laboratory or in extension activities, depending on the applicant’s professional expertise. Certain positions may be offered as 12-month appointments depending on the candidate’s expertise and program needs. All positions are supervised by the Department Head of the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department, in collaboration with the Director of the PPVM. The desired start date is June 2021 with teaching responsibilities to begin August 2021.
Successful candidates are expected to teach 80-100 percent within the new PPVM. This program will encompass the first two years of a veterinary curriculum whereby each year a cohort of 20 students will begin the professional curriculum and complete the first two years of Veterinary School at SDSU, and then finish their final two years of the DVM degree requirements at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine.
Teaching ability is expected in at least two to three areas of basic sciences and/or early veterinary clinical sciences. The program is seeking faculty with the ability to teach in the following areas: food animal medicine and surgery, companion animal medicine and surgery, basic clinical skills, clinical and/or anatomic pathology, veterinary anatomy and microscopic anatomy (histology), systemic (integrated) physiology, endocrinology and reproduction, genetics and genomics, biochemistry (cell and molecular biology), veterinary imaging, veterinary public health, agents of disease (bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology), veterinary dermatology, veterinary pharmacology and toxicology, preventative medicine, clinical skills, diagnostic lab techniques, clinical epidemiology and research methods, public health, or closely related disciplines.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary responsibility for each of these positions is to teach in the Professional DVM degree program in at least two to three areas of expertise and coordinate the course content to achieve the same learning objectives and outcomes as the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine’s first two years’ curriculum. Some pre-veterinary undergraduate teaching may also be possible. Other additional coordination and advising of Faculty and students within the PPVM may be included depending on the candidate’s expertise. The appointment may include establishing an extramurally funded research program and/or contributions to enhance the diagnostic services of the South Dakota Animal Disease Research & Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL). The research program should complement basic or clinical veterinary sciences, and/or the college’s focus on One-Health or production agriculture involving the human-animal-environmental health triad. This position provides an opportunity to collaborate with new and existing faculty members.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Sponsorship is not available for this position; must be eligible to work in the United States.
• DVM or equivalent degree in Veterinary Medicine from an educational institution accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education.
• Active involvement in a clinical or a diagnostic setting within the last ten (10) years.
• Ability to teach professional, graduate, and/or undergraduate students.
• Ability to assist professional PPVM students with non-thesis research projects as part of the requirements for students pursuing a concurrent non-thesis Master of Science degree.
• Scientific knowledge in One Health, production animal agriculture in the US or Canada, or related areas.
• Effective interpersonal skills, strong written and oral communication skills, and organizational capabilities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Teaching experience in a One Health domain, basic or clinical veterinary sciences, production animal agriculture, or related areas.
• Demonstrated collaborations in research and/or diagnostic activities.
• Publication record in refereed journals, trade publications, presentations at scientific and/or producer meetings.
• Board Certification and/or advanced degrees (MS, PhD) in relevant areas of the PPVM teaching program, research and/or diagnostic laboratory expertise.
• Established and recognized research experience.
