JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Overview:
The position is for an open-rank tenure-line faculty member in the Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing (Nese CON), whose research focuses on child maltreatment with a linkage to adolescent and child victims of sexual abuse/assault.

Faculty Position:

With a focus on the interdisciplinary topical area of Child Maltreatment as it relates to research targeting understanding and responding to the needs of communities and the impact on adolescents and young adults who are victims of sexual abuse/assault you will enjoy the benefit of being a member of Penn State’s R1 research community. Appointed as a co-funded hire, you will engage with the diverse research portfolio and expertise in Penn State’s Social Science Research Institute’s Child Maltreatment Solutions Network  and the Nese College of Nursing. Further, being a leader in the coordinating entity of the university for the dissemination of relevant communications, public awareness, student engagement, and service pertaining to child protection and well-being information and initiatives, you will help integrate these initiatives into all our academic units' teaching and research programs while also contributing to the Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing’s mission.

As an integral member of the Nese College of Nursing research faculty, you will be expected to direct a research program focused on child maltreatment and sexual abuse/ assault. In addition to accelerating strong collaborative interdisciplinary research, you will teach both undergraduate and graduate-level courses and direct dissertations. Also charged with engaging in outreach, you will work to disseminate research on child maltreatment and sexual abuse/assault to a range of stakeholders, including policymakers, nurses, and other practitioners, at national, regional, and local conferences and meetings.

You will need the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.

Faculty candidate:

With the complexity of sexual assault and forensics, to be successful in your pursuit of this opportunity, you need to have experience and expertise to provide leadership within the college and research to design, implement, and test interventions for this population. Additionally, you should have a strong publication record and a track record of securing external funding. Preference will be given to a senior candidate at the Associate or Full Professor level. A nursing license is strongly preferred.

Truly founded in collaboration, you would be a good fit for this role and culture if you are experienced in fostering collaborations with colleagues in other disciplines and units across the college. Finally, we seek a colleague who will pursue a program of externally funded research published in highly regarded, peer-reviewed journals in nursing, child maltreatment and sexual abuse/assault research.

Social Science Research Institute, Child Maltreatment Solutions Network:

Penn State’s Child Maltreatment Solutions Network has become a national leader in research designed to influence public policy that better protects vulnerable children from abuse. Its mission is to use research to improve outcomes for children by gathering evidence that facilitates intervention programs and influences policy reform at the local, state, and federal levels. 

Research

The Network's research efforts focus on the causes, prevention, detection, consequences, and treatment of child abuse and neglect. Dedicated to improving the well-being of children, youth, and families while expanding Penn State’s internationally recognized expertise in research, practice and education. They provide opportunities and support for collaborative and translational science in order to address the complex problems of child maltreatment. Our work covers the spectrum, ranging from research on child development and clinical treatments that foster child health to public policy that promotes child safety and well-being.

Education

Through undergraduate and graduate ­level coursework and other educational opportunities for faculty, staff, students and professionals, the Network strives to raise awareness and train the next generation of professionals. In addition, the Network facilitates events including an annual conference aimed at increasing awareness, disseminating cutting ­edge research, and supporting innovative programs.

Service

The Network aims to push the bounds of social and public policy through efficient translation of evidence­-based research. By partnering with community providers and public policy leaders at the local, state, and federal levels, our goal is to raise public awareness about the scope and gravity of child maltreatment and to elevate this issue as worthy of significant public health investment. Countering child maltreatment is a community concern that requires community-wide efforts. We engage with a wide array of agencies and organizations to learn more about local needs and to contribute expertise that will lead to safe, healthful environments for all children.

Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing:

The Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing is one of the most comprehensive colleges of nursing in any public university in the country. With over $17 million in research expenditures since the college’s inception in 2013, the college has been awarded over $8 million for gerontology research, over $4 million for the development of a sexual assault forensic examination telehealth center (SAFE-T Center), and approximately $1.5 million to support clinical and translational science. The SAFE-T Center is currently conducting longitudinal outcome studies that have not been done before in this field. In addition, the college is home to the Tressa Nese and Helen Diskevich Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, and Age-Friendly Care, PA, and delivers its award-winning curriculum across 12 Penn State Campus locations including Hershey Medical Center.

The Nese College of Nursing resides primarily at the University Park Campus.
