Job Description

The Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno seeks a seasoned, innovative science journalist or academic to serve as the Reynolds Professor of Practice in Science Communication.  This position is a 9-month, non-tenure track, appointment, available at the rank of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor, dependent upon experience.  The position includes a support account and a graduate assistant. The starting date for the position is July 1, 2024.

The Reynolds Professor of Practice in Science Communication will direct our Hitchcock Project for Visualizing Science, an interdisciplinary initiative that reimagines how we communicate science. It prepares students, scientists and media professionals to present stories in accessible forms such as narrative-driven data visualization, video explainers and documentary, as well as, with immersive media. The Hitchcock Project offers undergraduate and graduate curricula, experiential learning through journalistic production for our media partners, training programs, academic research, and public events to engage community members and media practitioners. The project was established in 2018 through a generous gift from biochemist and philanthropist Mick Hitchcock, Ph.D.

The Reynolds Professor of Practice in Science Communication will design and teach undergraduate and graduate courses on communicating science; direct content production; arrange interdisciplinary partnerships and public events; and oversee applied and basic research on communication effectiveness. Current partners include UNR colleges of science and medicine, KUNR public media, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, and Noticiero Móvil, the Reynolds School’s bilingual news service. Hitchcock Project initiatives also engage UNR’s new campus at Lake Tahoe.

Required Qualifications

The selected candidate will have professional journalistic experience in an area related to science; demonstrated experience with forms of visual communication; experience with university teaching or related forms of presentation (such as professional workshops); and at least a bachelor’s degree.
