Position Focus:

Reporting to the Sr. Associate Director, Online Engagement, the Assistant/Associate Director, Digital Marketing and Audience Engagement is a key member of the Marketing & Communications team and collaborates with partners throughout the Alumni Affairs & Development (AA&D) division to design and build email campaigns for signature events, alumni outreach, news, solicitations, and broad-base content marketing in support of the division’s donor and alumni engagement goals. This role is responsible for shaping the digital marketing strategy while fostering meaningful philanthropic connections with our alumni and donors.

As the division lead for Yale’s alumni and donor email marketing, this position will manage email campaigns through the build process, deployment, and analysis, and advise AA&D teams on the implementation of a single-platform email marketing tool. Key responsibilities include the following: Email Marketing Strategy: Develop and execute an overarching email marketing strategy to engage alumni and donors. This includes crafting email campaigns, automations, and journeys to nurture relationships, drive philanthropic efforts, and strengthen the Yale community. Audience Segmentation: Utilize data-driven insights to segment the alumni and donor audience effectively, ensuring that communications are tailored and relevant to each group's interests and preferences. Content Development: Collaborate with content creators and designers to craft compelling email content, including newsletters, event invitations, fundraising appeals, and alumni news updates. Ensure that emails are on-brand, visually appealing, and compelling. Marketing Automation: Implement and manage a single-platform email marketing tool to streamline campaign creation, tracking, and analysis. This includes setting up automation workflows for targeted messaging and reporting on key performance metrics. Data Analysis and Reporting: Regularly analyze email marketing campaign performance, using data to make informed decisions and optimize future strategies. Generate comprehensive reports to measure engagement, conversion, and return on investment. Compliance: Ensure email marketing practices adhere to legal requirements and best practices, including Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing (CAN-SPAM) and general data protection regulation (GDPR) regulations. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with other teams within Alumni Affairs & Development, as well as other university departments, to coordinate integrated marketing efforts that align with broader institutional goals. Testing and Optimization: Continuously A/B test various elements of email campaigns, such as subject lines, content, and send times, to improve open rates, click-through rates, and overall engagement. Professional Development: Stay current with industry trends and best practices in email marketing, digital engagement, and donor/alumni relations.


Essential Duties

1. Strategize with colleagues and stakeholders to develop, optimize, and analyze email campaigns. workflows, and, as appropriate, other digital communications.2. Manage and/or advise on list building, audience segmentation, and campaign targeting.3. Working independently or with creative team colleagues (writers, graphic designers), generating high-quality email and digital marketing content that is creative, strategic, and effective, developing and managing templates and content blocks within the designated email design system(s).4. Prioritize projects and manage multiple internal stakeholders with competing deadlines.5. Optimize channels and track the performance of campaigns; run appropriate tests and work within regulatory guidelines, accessibility, and brand standards.6. Maintain the email/digital communication calendar and develop production timelines for communications focused on a range of needs such as signature event emails, mass solicitations, and partner communications; collaborate with partners and stakeholders to schedule emails at appropriate times to achieve optimal results.7. Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in a related field and five years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated understanding of full-funnel marketing, audience segmentation, and enterprise-level system administration (managing campaigns and standards across multiple brands or divisions of a distributed organization).


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Expertise in email marketing best practices, including the ability to shape digital strategy for organizational goals related to revenue or engagement; to create and maintain processes; and to manage the entire lifecycle of email marketing campaigns.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Strong data analytics, data-driven decision making and reporting capabilities, with the ability to manage to KPIs and evaluate email marketing campaigns against goals.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Self-starter with strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders. Experience training team members on email marketing software.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Professionalism, maturity, and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality. Commitment to an inclusive workplace. Ability to engage with diverse audiences (age, gender, nationality, race/ethnicity, profession, sexual orientation, etc.).


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Minimum of 3 years’ experience leading a variety of email marketing campaigns for a complex organization with multiple stakeholders.

Knowledge of higher education fundraising and alumni engagement.

Experience with HubSpot, Pardot, Marketo, Salesforce, Anthology, or similar CRM-integrated email marketing platform
