Position Overview

The University of Kansas School of Music seeks to fill a full-time, academic year (nine month), tenure-track Assistant Professor - Artist performer to teach applied Tuba-Euphonium lessons (undergraduate and graduate) and related courses; maintain a strong Tuba-Euphonium studio; work individually and collaboratively in recruiting music performance, music education, and music therapy students; supervise/mentor teaching assistants; work cooperatively in support of the School of Music and the University, including service on graduate and faculty committees; establish a research/creative agenda pursuant of artistic growth and an expanding reputation of excellence; participate actively in the cultural and intellectual life of the School and the University.

The University of Kansas School of Music is a comprehensive university music school offering professional training in a wide array of specializations through baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degree programs.  A charter member of the National Association of Schools of Music (1928), KU is the only institution authorized by the Kansas Board of Regents to grant doctoral degrees in music.

Job Description

Teaching 40%

  • Teach applied tuba-euphonium lessons (undergraduate and graduate) and related courses.
  • Build and maintain a strong tuba-euphonium studio.
  • Supervise/mentor teaching assistants.
  • Teach additional music major and /or non-major courses of candidate’s expertise. (Please suggest potential courses in your letter of interest.)

Research/Creative Work – 40% 
  • Establish a research/creative agenda pursuant of artistic growth and an expanding reputation of excellence.
  • Participate actively in the cultural and intellectual life of the School and the University.
Service - 20% 
  • Work individually and collaboratively in recruiting music performance, music education, and music therapy students.  
  • Work cooperatively in support of the School of Music and the University.
  • Serve on graduate and faculty committees.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in music; ABD candidates will be considered if degree will be completed by August 17, 2024; OR a Master’s degree in music with 3 years' professional performance experience
  • Demonstrated record of productive teaching excellence and recruitment at the collegiate or equivalent level
  • Documented success as a tuba-euphonium artist/performer
