Pay Rate: $17.50 per hour
Position Description:
University Archives is looking for an Archives Research Assistant to conduct research for the campus history map, a collaborative effort between the John R. Borchert Map Library and University Archives. The interactive map, which is being updated and enhanced, uses physical maps, aerial images, photographs, and data to publicly share information about university history, such as campus buildings, events and campus spaces, and views of campus through time. The Archives Research Assistant will conduct research, corroborate and gather data points, and develop contextual and descriptive text to incorporate into the updated map. On-site work is expected (Elmer L. Andersen Library, West Bank); remote work is possible.
Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research using physical and digitized archival collections on pre-identified aspects of university history which will be incorporated into the updated and potentially future campus history maps.
  • Identify additional archival materials for digitization and use in the map, and create metadata conforming to standards for those digital objects.
  • Help develop documentation around the campus history map project (e.g., data dictionary, etc.)

Required:

  • Undergraduate-level coursework, either in progress or completed.
  • Eagerness to learn and ask questions when needed.
  • Interest in working in collaborative work environments (including with university and/or community members) on historical, archival, and cultural memory projects.
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Organized and detail-oriented.

Preferred:

  • Experience conducting archival research.
  • Experience creating StoryMaps or other similar digital humanities platforms.
  • Familiarity with digital collection metadata standards.
