Work Schedule Summary
The work schedule of our temporary positions can be quite flexible; however, applicants need to be aware that there are no guaranteed hours of work. This season we are interested in hiring for up to 2 positions. One position could start full time as soon as weather permits, the other would be part time during the school year, then full time from mid-May until school starts again in the fall. There is usually some work available until late November.
The normally scheduled workweek will be Monday through Friday (no weekend work), with the full-time positions working 8 hours per day. For both the full time and part-time workers, there is some flexibility with the actual hours of work, but generally the hours will occur between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. With advance notice, we can sometimes offer the flexibility of working around your own scheduling needs such as for school schedules or holiday plans.
As noted above, applicants responding to this recruitment notice will be considered for positions which meet our immediate workload needs but may also be considered for positions up to 3 months after the close of this announcement.
Employees who are hired to work at least 20 hours per week and for 5 months or longer may be eligible for limited benefits including membership in the PERSI retirement system and eligibility for vacation leave, sick leave and holiday pay, unless a full-time student.

Position Responsibilities


Position Summary
Under the direction of the Arboreta Superintendent/Horticulturist, the incumbent performs various duties to maintain and develop the grounds of the University of Idaho Arboreta.

Responsibilities


Job Duty Function Assists with maintaining and developing the Arboretum grounds and collections by:

Performing various landscape maintenance and construction tasks including mowing, trimming, pruning, irrigating, planting, weeding, trail construction and trail maintenance; and performing routine maintenance of grounds equipment including cleaning, greasing and checking fluid levels.

Position Qualifications


Required Qualifications
- Due to the duties of this position, successful candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
- Experience and willingness to work in areas where various landscape and agricultural chemicals have been used, and to work with the reclaimed water utilized in the irrigation system.
- Experience with safely operating various types of landscape maintenance equipment including mowers (both tractor and push), weed trimmers, small tractors and all kinds of hand tools from shovels to pruners; work independently without close supervision; work safely and cooperatively with other team members to accomplish desired results; and interact with public visitors in a positive manner.
- MUST: possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license and be able to meet policy requirements for driving University vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the fields of horticulture, landscape architecture, landscape maintenance or landscape construction.
- Education or training in the fields of horticulture, landscape architecture, landscape maintenance or landscape construction.
- Experience safely operating and performing routine maintenance on small mowers, weed trimmers and other landscape maintenance equipment.
- Basic mechanical skills for routine maintenance of small engines and equipment.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Physical requirements include lifting, carrying and/or otherwise moving items weighing approximately 50 pounds; bending, stooping, kneeling and moving continuously throughout the shift including up and down slopes; and working outdoors in inclement weather.
